Friend, [sign and send the petition: Demand full governing autonomy and representation for D.C.]( [SIGN AND SEND THE PETITION]( The U.S. Senate is set to vote on two disapproval resolutions for legislation that were lawfully passed by the Council of the District of Columbia. These two bills went through the entire hearing and markup process in the D.C. Council and were enacted into law. Now Congress, where D.C. residents have no representation, will attempt to overturn them. D.C.’s lack of statehood has consistently made it a target of Republican lawmakers. Congress has ultimate jurisdiction over the district and continues to exercise authority over D.C. local affairs. Congress reviews all D.C. legislation before it can become law, can modify or even overturn such legislation, impose new and unwanted laws on the District, and retain authority over the local budget. Nowhere else in the country has to undergo this law-making process. D.C. also has no representation in Congress and, ultimately, no say over local laws and budgets as a result. [Sign and send the petition: Demand full governing autonomy and representation for D.C.]( [SIGN AND SEND THE PETITION]( Local laws were enacted to address important local concerns, most notably criminal justice reform, reproductive freedom, democracy, and equal treatment under the law. Efforts by members of Congress to impose legislative “riders” or pass disapproval resolutions usurp the prerogative of D.C.’s elected mayor and council and the citizens they represent, and Americans in D.C. have no vote in Congress to cast against this egregious and increasingly relentless attack on their local democracy. We urge Congress to respect D.C.’s local autonomy and oppose any efforts that seek to force congressional views upon D.C. residents. We demand the Senate not overturn local D.C. laws. [Sign and send the petition: Demand the Senate uphold D.C.’s lawfully enacted local legislation and uphold what little democracy over 700,000 D.C. residents retain.]( [SIGN AND SEND THE PETITION]( Thanks for all you do, Erin Tulley, Daily Kos Daily Kos Relies on Readers Like You We don't have billionaire backers like some right-wing media outlets.
