Friend, GOP leaders are considering a radical [plan]( to replace income tax with a 30% federal sales tax and abolish the IRS. If enacted, their plan would raise prices on everything we buy, including groceries, gas, clothing, medicine, and more. Inflation has already raised the monthly bills we struggle to pay. Now Republicans want to raise them even more. [Sign the petition: Say no to a national 30% sales tax.]( [SIGN THE PETITION]( This legislation is receiving traction in the House so McCarthy can appease his party's far-right extremist faction--a faction that has grown into a loud and influential force no longer in the party fringes but front and center. To secure the speakership, McCarthy promised those members their sales tax plan would go through the committee process. A national sales tax would be disastrous for the economy. It would hit middle and low-income people the hardest while giving wealthy folks a break on their income taxes. This is a Republican power grab designed to benefit wealthy donors instead of working people. Their plan would only make our lives harder to afford. Congress cannot support it. [Sign the petition: Say no to a national 30% sales tax.]( [SIGN THE PETITION]( Thanks for all you do, Mayra Souza, Daily Kos P.S. Below is an email we sent out earlier against a national sales tax: --------------------------------------------------------------- Friend, Republicans in Congress have [proposed]( a new tax plan that would eliminate the federal income tax, dismantle the IRS, and impose a 30% national sales tax on most goods and services. That means prices would go up for goods Americans buy every day, like groceries, cars, homes, healthcare and more–when inflation is already high. It would increase monthly bills and shift the tax burden from wealthy incomes to the lower and middle class. [Sign the petition: Say no to a national 30% sales tax.]( [SIGN THE PETITION]( Republicans are pushing this plan because Kevin McCarthy made concessions to the most extreme members of his caucus, promising to give the proposal a hearing in the Ways and Means Committee to gain the speakership. So, this is a plan that is designed not only to benefit the wealthy instead of the working class but also to further Kevin McCarthy's hold on power. It's out of touch, and Congress cannot support it.
