Friend, the House has had nine votes (at least) to elect a speaker and Kevin McCarthy still does not have the votes. He continues to clock in at 201 votes, while Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries has consistently received 212 votes from his caucus. [Sign the petition to Congress: Enough of this charade. Hakeem Jeffries for Speaker.]( [Sign the petition](
The Kevin McCarthy drama stopped being funny after a day or two. Now, it's perverse. Until the House elects a new speaker, they are not allowed to do anything. Besides not passing laws themselves, it also means that no bills [passed by the D.C. City Council]( can become law. Hakeem Jeffries is a qualified member of Congress with 10 years of experience. He is a good leader who is ready to do the hard work of governing. With Kevin McCarthy failing to rally his Republican members around him, it's time for enough members to elect Jeffries as speaker. All that needs to happen is for six House Republicans to vote for Jeffries (giving him the 218 required for a majority), or eleven can vote "present" to bring his winning threshold to 212. --------------------------------------------------------------- Friend, [sign the petition: Hakeem Jeffries for House Speaker.]( [Sign the petition](
In a chaotic turn of events that dragged on for two days, House Republicans failed to elect a Speaker after Kevin McCarthy could not overcome opposition within his own party. With all members voting, McCarthy needed to meet the majority threshold at 218. Not only did McCarthy lack the votes, he consistently got fewer votes than House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffriesâwho has unanimous support in his caucus. In all six recorded votes, Jeffries finished first at 212 votesâwith McCarthy lagging behind at around 201. Until the U.S. House elects a Speaker, the Constitution says they are unable to conduct any other business. Fortunately, there is an easy way out of thisâeither six Republicans could vote for Hakeem Jeffries, or eleven can vote "present" to allow the 212 votes for Jeffries to be enough to win and take office. Hakeem Jeffries is an impressive leader who has served in Congress for 10 years, and has a well-deserved reputation as a consensus builder. As Rep. Pete Aguilar [reminded the House](: "[Jeffries] does not traffic in extremism. He does not grovel to or make excuses for a twice-impeached former president. He does not bend the knee to anyone who would seek to undermine our democracy."
