Friend, just how cynical and power hungry is Donald Trump? Check out this remarkable bit of hypocritical voter suppression: For months now Trump has been rallying against vote by mail, falsely claiming that it's susceptible to fraud, that it's the Democrats' way to rig the election and the latest; that we will not know the results for days, maybe months, maybe even years. Then his tone changed, at least for one state -- Florida. In a [tweet]( this past week, Trump declared: "Whether you call it Vote by Mail or Absentee Voting, in Florida the election system is Safe and Secure, Tried and True. Florida’s Voting system has been cleaned up (we defeated Democrats attempts at change), so in Florida I encourage all to request a Ballot & Vote by Mail!" Trump's new bode of confidence in vote-by-mail has nothing to do with integrity in Florida's elections infrastructure, but probably because someone finally clued him into the fact that, in Florida, [more Republicans vote by mail than Democrats](. Meanwhile, in [Nevada](, a state where Trump lost by only two points in 2016, the Trump campaign is suing the state to stop absentee ballots from being mailed out to registered voters. So, vote by mail is just fine for Trump in states where Republicans use it more than Democrats, but something worth suing over in a state where that might not be the case. [Trump's strategy to win in November is to suppress the votes of as many Democrats as possible, and he is using his power and influence as President to make this happen. In the email below, we outline Trump's multi-pronged strategy to suppress Democratic votes and our plan to fight back, but as a grassroots funded organization we can only go as far as you take us. Can you give $5 to Daily Kos TODAY?]( Keep fighting, Amanda McKay, Daily Kos --------------------------------------------------------------- Friend, Trump knows that, if given the opportunity, more people will vote by mail in 2020 than in any previous election--especially given the coronavirus pandemic that he and his administration have completely failed to contain. Trump also knows that the more people vote, the more likely he is to lose. That's why he has attacked and demonized vote-by-mail at least [70 times]( since March. To hedge his bets, Trump has installed a millionaire GOP-donor to run the U.S. Postal Service. [Trump's new Postmaster General]( has already implemented "cut-costing" policies that have led to days-long backlogs, undermining voters' confidence in the postal service and its ability to deliver ballots on time. [This is all part of Trump's larger strategy to win in November, adding to tactics like using social media to spread disinformation about voting by mail, funding lawsuits that keep mail-in ballots out of the hands of voters, and recruiting tens of thousands of veterans and off-duty law enforcement officers to intimidate prospective voters who show up at polling places. We can fight back against Trump's voter suppression and beat him by turning out a record number of voters, but as a grassroots funded organization we can only go as far as you take us. Can you give $5 to Daily Kos TODAY?]( Trump's reelection campaign has a multi-pronged strategy to prevent people from voting, as well as to sow confusion and distrust into the process. [As Rolling Stone recently documented, it has three main points:]( - First, thanks to Big Tech companies like Facebook, Trump and his right-wing allies are using social media to spread disinformation about voting, in particular about the safety and security of voting by mail. - Second, backed by donations from the ultra-wealthy elite, Republicans are spending millions of dollars on lawyers to file lawsuits designed to keep mail-in ballots out of the hands of voters whenever possible - Third, Trump's campaign, via the Republican National Committee, is giving millions of dollars to Republican state parties to recruit 50,000 volunteers to directly intimidate prospective voters at "key precincts"--including veterans and off-duty law enforcement officers. That is Trump's plan to suppress the vote, and we are not going to take it lying down. Daily Kos has a plan to fight back, tooth and nail, every step of the way: - For every piece of Republican disinformation on voting by mail, through our vast email and SMS lists and our highly trafficked website, we are using our deep reach into the progressive base to arm millions of grassroots activists with the facts they need to spread the truth about voting by mail. - For every lawsuit Republicans file to prevent voters from accessing mail-in ballots, at Daily Kos we are sending over 100,000 letters to elected officials from their constituents, demanding funding for voting by mail in 2020. - For every person Republicans recruit to intimidate people away from voting, at Daily Kos we are going to recruit twice as many volunteers to help people vote. With 100 days until the election, we are well on our way to this goal, having recruited over 32,000 volunteers for effective Get Out the Vote operations already. And because we are not taking anything for granted, in the event that Trump loses and refuses to concede, we have also already signed up thousands of volunteers for what comes after the election, too. [Please support the Daily Kos Get Out the Vote campaign by giving $5 TODAY to help us recruit a record number of volunteers to turnout every possible voter, send a record number of letters to Congress to demand adequate funding for voting by mail, and spread the truth about voting by mail to every corner of the country. Together, we can cancel Republican voter suppression efforts.]( Keep fighting, Amanda McKay, Daily Kos If you wish to donate by mail instead, please send a check to Daily Kos, PO Box 70036, Oakland, CA, 94612.
