MANUFACTURED Greetings, Callers, Today is going to be what we all expect it to be. There are many kinds of people Iâve encountered over the years, but Iâll be discussing two kinds that seem to be prevailing in national politics today. With that, I give you ⦠MANUFACTURED I noticed something funny several months ago that Iâll probably never forget. I had gotten to work earlier than is typical for me, so I decided to walk to the nearest CVS to grab some supplies for the day. It was an unusually warm morning, spring or late spring, about 7 a.m. in Washington, D.C., just a few blocks from the White House. It was also a Monday, and this was prior to many arms of the government, lobbying and political communications world demanding people come into the office again on Mondays and Fridays. So if you wanted to shoot a scene for a movie where D.C. is empty, this would be the time. No cars, no traffic, no people. And I mean none, almost completely empty. Except for one person, I saw as I banked a right out of my office. She was standing at a crosswalk, waiting for the little red hand sign to turn into a welcoming white walk sign. As I got closer, I noticed to my amusement, she was wearing a COVID mask. I stood beside her for a second. There were no other people that I could see, save for one man a half a block away hosing down the sidewalk in front of his business. Whatâs more, there wasnât a single car in sight in any direction. Nothing, nada. When I say a second, I mean a second. Iâm far too busy to let even my mild amusement hold me up. I jaywalked to my destination, leaving her behind me to wait for her robot overlord to inform her when it was safe to cross. This morning, I saw something of a near identical spirit, although different in almost every detail. Kamala Harris did some door-knocking in Reading, PA. Itâs the kind of dog and pony media show that you expect to be choreographed to some extent, but even so, there was an odd moment. At one point, Harris was talking to a couple outside their home. Iâm not sure how this moment came to be, I havenât reviewed all the footage yet, but it would be a safe assumption these Pennsylvanians noticed a massive, yet non-threatening hubbub outside and decided to come out and engage, as good, neighborly Americans are apt to do. The reason I say itâs safe to assume they came out is because you can clearly hear Harris say she wants them to go back inside their home so she can walk up and knock on the door. You and anyone else with some knowledge of how TV works might be tempted to dismiss this rather harmless ask. Presumably this is for the cameras and the campaign and whatnot, the thinking goes. They need to get the shot. But two things stop me here. One is, there are hundreds of doors she could knock on if she wanted to attempt to get a candid reaction. (Itâs possible [this]( could be one such reaction, but itâs hard to tell.) The second is that Harris [kiboshed]( a genuine, human moment as it was unfolding between her and normal people in order to manufacture a reality. And I canât tell how to interpret this other than sheer hubris, but she did it in plain view of several rolling cameras. I guess this brings me to the conclusion, the two kinds of people. Thereâs a group of people who still yearn to be told what reality is. They need it to be manufactured for them. They take solace in it. These are the âtrust the expertsâ kind of people who wait for a robot algorithm to tell them itâs safe to cross the street. The other kind observes reality as it unfolds and reacts accordingly as best they can. Even though I know which kind of person I prefer being, I donât condemn the other side. I do, on the other hand, condemn the kind of leaders and the kind of âruling class,â as Tucker calls it, that seeks to manufacture an unreality for the rest of America to follow. All political campaigns and politicians are manufactured to some extent, even Trumpâs. They read the numbers, they make certain plays. There is no campaign devoid of even a dollop of cynicism and contrivance. But Harris, as Iâm sure you know, dear reader, is in a league of her own. I wonât unpack that for you, as Iâm sure books will be written about the hastily constructed illusion of Kamala Harris 2024. Win or lose, though, one thing you can be sure about is that Harris the person is someone elseâs manufactured reality. We really have no idea who the real Harris is.
