Why do we only ever see one side of the moon? – Emma This is such a great question because it's one of those things that you never realize until you do. All the planets rotate, so why doesn't the moon? Why is the man in the moon always facing us? The answer is that the moon is tidally locked with the planet Earth. That means it takes the same amount of time to rotate on its own axis as it does to orbit the planet — 28 days. Tidal locking is pretty common in the universe — it's likely to happen anytime something small is going around something big. If two similarly sized objects are orbiting each other, they might end up tidally locked with each other. That's what happened to Pluto and its eternal partner Charon. They'll both face each other for eternity, making them the solar system's reigning staring contest champions.
