One thing we were fascinated to learn was that there are several ["families" of phobias]( — arachnophobia is an "animal fear," while a fear of needles falls under the "blood and injury" category. As to where they come from, that depends. Animal fears are strongly influenced by genetics (that makes some sense, if you think about how many dangerous snakes and spiders threatened our ancestors), while phobias in the blood and injury department seem to hang their hat largely on a person's individual experiences.
