If youâre constantly checking social media⦠Listening to podcasts⦠and watching YouTube videos⦠ALL to find out the latest update in this crazy election⦠First of all, Iâve been there, so I understand your desire to know whatâs going on â but I challenge you to ask yourself ONE thing: âIs my obsession with this non-stop, 24-hour news cycle killing my productivity?â If the answer is YES⦠⦠and you want to get your optimal performance (and sanity) back⦠Then I challenge you to tap into the power of what I call the âStreak Stackâ. Hereâs what I mean: Thereâs something about a streak⦠You donât want to break it⦠You know how hard you worked to get here⦠And you know that one simple moment of temptation wonât be worth it. So when it comes to changing habits â like doom scrolling political videos on YouTube⦠You need to leverage two things. 1. Accountability to Someone You Deeply Do Not Want to Disappoint 2. The Streak Stack The Power of the Streak Stack is that youâve worked so hard, and you donât want to throw all that hard work out the window. With each day that you add to the streak, itâs power grows. Itâs like the Network Effect⦠The more people in your network, the faster your network grows. For example, itâs been 991 days since Iâve drank alcohol. Iâm so close to an epic number => 1,000 days. Why would I throw that all away for a drink? And then start again from zero? No way! Likewise⦠Itâs been 64 days since Iâve checked a news website or used Twitter. The freedom has been wonderful. The extra time to read books, meditate, and get settled in after our move back to Mexico has been incredibly helpful. Itâs very embarrassing to admit⦠But over the past year I became a bit of a news addict. Hereâs how it happened⦠So many nights after feeding Sofia⦠I found myself âstuckâ under a beautiful, peaceful sleeping baby on the couch. Now if youâre a parent, you know the conundrum. You dare not move, lest you wake the baby. So I couldnât get up. (At least not until I knew she was in a deep, deep sleep.) Foolishly, instead of using that extra time to pray or meditate, or even to plot and scheme grand plans⦠I chose to take the easy way out⦠With phone in reach, I began to scroll. I found a guy on Twitter that was entertaining⦠He covered the news, parenting, and workouts⦠So each night Iâd read his feed for a few minutes. Sometimes for 20 minutes or more! Then this ânews habitâ bled into my lunchtime⦠Soon my days were dying a death of 1,000 cuts as Iâd âgive myself just 5 minutesâ to check Twitter, or the Globe & Mail, or even the NY Times! Nearly everything I looked at was âRage Baitâ. Incredibly effective and addictive rage bait, I must say. (A good example of the power of copywriting!) Recently I decided enough was enough. Time to break a bad habit. Time to close down the media. So that I could open my mind. For my American friends⦠You already know who youâre voting for in November. Youâre either Team Orange or Team Blue. Thereâs no new article about Trumpâs scandals or Kamalaâs latest flip-flop that will change your mind. Itâs already set. But be honest⦠How many slivers of time do you give to this issue every week? Even one is too many. So letâs put you on a streak thatâs free of election news for the next 6 weeks. If you really want to âcram for this testâ, you can read the news on November 1st. Your âelection examâ isnât until Nov 5th. You donât need to make your final decision now. That means that for the next 42 days⦠You donât need to collect any new trivia about either candidate â no matter how juicy it may be. After all, if you already know who youâre voting for⦠There isnât much else you can do to affect the outcome. So⦠Start a streak. Just say no to the news today! Tell a friend or coach for accountability. Use the Law of Subtraction (delete your news apps, Twitter, etc.) for success. (Or use the Opal App to block those, Coach Danielâs favorite).
