Known bigot and homophobe wants to ban drag – but he can do it. [Courier]( Have you seen these photos, friend? Probably not. These are photos of JD Vance from college, as confirmed by a representative for his office and the fact-checking website Snopes. Yes, this is the same JD Vance who has cut his teeth in politics by promoting anti-LGBTQ issues like criminalizing gender-affirming care for minors, getting LGBTQ+ identities off the U.S. census, and calling LGBTQ+ people and advocates “groomers.” JD Vance’s hypocrisy should be all over the news, but the legacy media has been dead silent since the photos emerged online nearly two days ago. [We’ll explain why in a sec, but if you support COURIER’s efforts to cover the 2024 election, can you chip in $20 now?]( Here’s the thing, friend: we don’t care whether JD Vance dressed in drag in college, or if he still likes to dress in drag now. We don’t think how people dress and express their identities is any of our business (or anyone else’s). But you know who does? JD Vance. Like many in the MAGA-right, Vance has climbed to the top of the Republican party by attacking the LGBTQ+ community to create a climate of fear and a moral panic among his base. This is the same guy who called married father of two Pete Buttigieg “a childless cat lady” because Vance doesn’t see Secretary Pete’s family make-up as valid as his own. The consequence of Vance and the far-right’s demagoguery has been a dangerous rollback of rights and protections. According to the Human Rights Campaign, anti-LGBTQ+ legislation exploded in state legislatures 2023. Not only that, but in 2023 there was more than a 30% increase in violence against the LGBTQ+ community. And we know it’s only going to get worse if Trump and Vance win. Project 2025 would end federal protections designed to stop discrimination on the basis of “sexual orientation, gender identity, transgender status, and sex characteristics.” Look, Vance wearing drag isn’t a major story, but his hypocrisy and anti-LGBTQ+ agenda are. And while LGBTQ+ publications like Out and The Advocate are publishing the photos, the legacy media is trying to bury it. Imagine if these photos were of Tim Walz, do you think Fox News would ignore it? You already know the answer to that. At COURIER, we believe the mainstream media should be calling out Vance’s hypocrisy instead of hiding it. There’s too much on the line for the LGBTQ+ community. That’s why we offer our factual reporting for free in 11 battleground states across the country.
