A couple days ago I shared what I’m calling "discipline flips". Basically, I recently set a goal of waking up at 5am and struggled mightily. Then I realized that it’s not about the discipline to wake up early at 5am. It’s the discipline to go to bed early at 8:30pm. Don’t wake up early. Go to bed early. That little flip or switch has made a huge difference. So I asked my readers if they knew of any discipline flips and I got some great responses. Here are 3 good ones: Discipline Flip #1 The discipline to write each day is hard. The discipline to set a timer is easy. Timers are magic and they're under-utilized for productivity. When you see a timer ticking down you can’t help but get to work on something. My timer is ticking down right now keeping me on track writing this email. Discipline Flip #2 The discipline to save money is hard. The discipline to set up an automatic transfer is easy. Set up the auto-transfer once and you never have to consciously make the decision to save or invest. Discipline Flip #3 The discipline to go to the gym or workout is hard. The discipline to simply put on your gym gear is easy. Getting dressed is something you do each day. I’ve noticed that it’s darn near impossible for me to NOT ride my bike (my preferred form of exercise) if I have the discipline to put on my cycling bibs and socks. I feel ridiculous if I don’t go at least jump on the bike for a bit. Others have told me they lay out all their workout gear in plain sight the night before so it’s sitting there staring at them in the morning. I even had one guy tell me he goes to sleep in his workout gear so when he wakes up all he has to do is put on his shoes and head out the door. So again the point is: If you have a goal… and you’re finding it hard to be disciplined in your pursuit of that goal… think about how you might flip the discipline to an easier action or behavior. It’s powerful and it works wonders in my experience. I've got an email on actually setting goals as a copywriter that I'll send out tomorrow.
