(Okay fine, I didn't really notice it, she did, and now it's obviously driving me insane). Our laundry machine is in the garage so a lot of times, in a rush, we'll throw a dirty rag or t-shirt to the side of the door that leads out to the garage. A shirt inevitably turns into a pile... and it grows until one of us finally breaks down and moves it. We've been playing this game ever since we moved in 3 months ago. But this evening my wife did something about it! Bless her womanly soul. She read a minimalist book that said figure out your habits, and design & declutter around them. Don't try to change every habit or routine, work with them. So in our case, instead of implementing a rule like, "No putting clothes there", she bought a nicely designed hamper to put next to the door. The simplicity of this solve humbles and inspires me. Here I am writing an email about a f-ing laundry hamper... I was thinking about a problem I have with my business. I like to keep my newsletters fresh -- almost always writing them the day of. However, when fires (business or personal or global) pop up, I often miss a day, sometimes several. I'm normally able to rationalize these misses because, truly, the only one who really notices & pays super close attention to your business is you... But just like the laundry issue, this is an inefficiency I'd like to solve and hedge for. I think I have some fairly counter-intuitive ideas about how to solve this problem but I wanted to open it up to you for fun. All but a select few of you are smart :-) How would you approach this problem from a habits and routines pov? In your mind, is it as simple as having a stockpile of emails to hedge against a volatile routine? Is it time management? Or is it something deeper? I think it might be.
