Hey there. Tim here. Jules is in Boston with the kiddos to meet her brand new niece. I'm home by myself. I don't know what to do with myself. Who am I? What is life really? --------------------------------------------------------------- Sponsored This week's issue is [brought to you by Lili](=). New age banking for a new world of digital business. --------------------------------------------------------------- 1. An Experiment That Tripled My Email Subscribers It's easy for me to talk about the importance of building an email list, but that doesn't help you much, does it? Knowing you have to build your email list and getting subscribers are two different things. You know what you must do and you want to know HOW to do it. My promise to you is always to be useful and to give you the actionable information you need to EXECUTE. No guru babble from me, ever ... that's a promise. Let's get into it. This week, I am going to show you how one simple change I made tripled my email signups. Getting Called Out At CEX Last week, I was asked to speak at the Creator Economy Expo in Cleveland. I had a great time and I felt very important on stage. At the end of my presentation, someone asked me a question that I had no good answer for. The man asked "how come you don't use a giveaway to collect more emails?" I don't use giveaways on my sites because I believe the best way to get newsletter subscribers is to simply create and publish a valuable newsletter that people enjoy. But the gentleman had a point and his question got me thinking. Am I resting on my laurels? Is there anything else I could be doing to increase my conversion rate? The answer is obviously yes. So I decided to do an experiment and see if I could increase my email signups with a popup. I Started With Sober Nation Most of you know about [Sober Nation](. The site gets a lot of traffic, so it's always been a mystery to me why so few people subscribed to the mailing list. I decided that Sober Nation was a good place to start. Last Thursday, I published an email popup that looks like this. The popup is set to trigger once a day and triggers after 3 seconds on the website. In my mind, I was simply doing a fun experiment and I didn't go into it expecting much in terms of results. With that said, the results shocked me. I couldn't believe how much more effective email popups were in collecting new subscribers than what I have been doing, which was to simply add signup forms on my site. Let's Look At The Data For Sober Nation, my email signups grew by almost 50%. I didn't create a free giveaway, I didn't do any fancy targeting. All I did was make my newsletter more available to the people who came to the website. Below is the email signups from the last 7 days. So since last Thursday, when I published the popup, I generated a 45.6% increase in signups. But Wait ... There's More On Tuesday, after looking at how effective this email popup was for Sober Nation, I decided to do it for my hyper local site, called [YourBoulder](. YourBoulder monetizes through newsletter ads. It's a small side project and currently has about 2800 active subscribers. I send out a weekly newsletter that lists the weekend events happening in Boulder CO. Email subscribers for YourBoulder are even more valuable than they are for Sober Nation. On Tuesday, I designed a pop up and hit publish. Here's what it looks like. Since Tuesday, the email signups have increased by (wait for it ... ) 300%! I TRIPLED my email signups by adding an email popup. For the past two years, I was always excited if I had a day where YourBoulder got 3 email signups. I would expect anywhere between 0 - 2 signups a day. Now, I'm averaging 8 a day. This is a big deal. Since Copyblogger has over 100,000 subscribers, you may be thinking that I scoff at the idea of generating 7 email signups a day. This is absolutely untrue. Over the course of a year, this will add 2500 new subscribers to the email list AT MINIMUM. This allows me to double my rates for sponsorships. If I continue selling out sponsorships, that's an extra $25,000 a year! A $25,000 dollar increase in revenue is nothing to scoff at. This is especially exciting considering that all I did was add an email popup. Should You Be Worried About Annoying People With Popups? No. What's the purpose of your website? Why do you create content and share it with the world? What's your objective? I hope your objective is two fold. You create content because you want to ... - be of service to your audience - grow your business By adding an email popup, you aren't negating either of those agendas. In fact, you are only increasing your ability to serve and grow. You are making yourself more available to those who choose to follow you and you are clarifying who you ARE NOT trying to serve. An email popup is a quick way of getting to the point. You are simply saying ... "If you want more, you can sign up here. If not, that's ok and this isn't for you." That's a win / win for everyone. Yes, I Will Be Adding Popups To All My Sites The data is clear. Popups work. Why would I wait another second? Why would you? I am excited to continue experimenting with popups. The next phase of my experiment will be to A/B test different popups. Currently, all my popups are the full page "welcome mat" style. What happens if I use different tag lines? What happens if I give away a free eBook in my popup? This is exciting and fun. I never would have given this a try if that gentleman at the conference didn't challenge my worldview. I will continue to keep you posted on the results and I hope that you challenge your own preconceived notions of what works and what doesn't work. You may surprise yourself. --------------------------------------------------------------- 2. LEAKED DOCUMENTS Show That Google Is In Big Trouble This week's episode was fascinating. Ethan and I went through a leaked document, where an anonymous source who works as a Google engineer broke down all the ways that Google is suspectable to massive disruption through A.I. In the leak, the source proclaims that there is no stopping an open source ecosystem. The world is changing, are you going to be left behind? [Click here to listen to the full episode](=). --------------------------------------------------------------- 3. How Do You Monetize a Brand? (Members Only) This week in [The Copyblogger Academy](=), I replied to a user submitted question with a detailed breakdown on how to monetize your brand. This is the most common question I get. Many of you are nervous and apprehensive to start monetizing. I was too in the beginning. When you are getting started, there are a lot of insecurities about what you offer. - will people buy your products? - will your products be good enough? - do people even care? [Here's what you do ...](=) P.S. - For those of you who are considering joining The Academy, you can do so by [clicking this link](=). I offer a 30 day, full money back guarantee. I think you'll quickly find that the return on your investment will be well worth it. --------------------------------------------------------------- Final Thought I'm thinking a lot about being busy. As I said, I have had the house to myself for the last two days. Without Jules and the kiddos, I feel uneasy. There is so much space (both physical space and mental space) that I feel the need to fill. My natural reaction is to "do something." I'll write another sales email, I'll send another message on slack, or I'll complete another task. As I get older, I'm seeing the diminishing returns of doing work for the sake of doing work. As writers, creators, and entrepreneurs, we need to respect our own minds. We need to give ourselves room to process, contemplate, and think. This is important because judgement is important. The negative consequences of making one bad decision are much bigger than the positive consequences of a good decision. It only takes one bad choice to lose it all. Most of the time, success is about making small steps forward over the course of time, and not doing anything stupid along the way. So yes, time to think is plenty important. It's taken me a long time to learn this, but I am getting it. Love you guys. Talk to you next week. Tim Give us 30 Minutes, And We'll Transform How You Sell Online.
