By using AI to mimic the voice of a loved one, a friend, or even a politician, this technology can be manipulated to persuade you to give up money, vote a certain way, or hand over sensitive personal information like Social Security numbers and more. Have you received a phone call from a scammer mimicking the voice of someone you know, or someone well-known? If so, your experience will help us push the Federal Trade Commission to adopt strong rules to keep this technology from harming consumers. These impersonations are easy and cheap to do because the software is trained on a large amount of video and audio recordings. Even if you’re not a celebrity or well-known politician, voices can be harvested from social media and other online sources, making consumers more vulnerable. The Federal Trade Commission received fraud complaints from 2.6 million consumers last year, with imposter fraud the as most common category. Since AI voice impersonations don’t require a lot of skill, these types of scams may become much more common.  The FTC is seeking to set strong, clear rules that hold impersonators accountable, as well as companies that know—or have reason to know—that their software is being used for fraud. Your stories are important.
