Dear Friend, The Supreme Court’s recent Chevron ruling that undercuts our government’s ability to protect your family from contaminated food and tainted water, or financial scams and dangerous banking practices, will likely embolden giant corporations to challenge even more rules that keep you safe. But we’re already at work to stop this. More than 22,000 people already have taken action to push Congress to pass legislation that would protect us from this assault on these safeguards.  Congress has the power to make sure there are strong rules in place that hold corporations accountable; we just need to make sure they hear that we want action now! [Please add your name,]( and stand with us as we fight together for a safe and fair marketplace. Meg Bohne Consumer Reports --------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Friend, We often take for granted that we’ll be protected from threats like contaminated food, hazardous products, dirty air and water, and predatory financial schemes. But many of the consumer and safety protections we rely on are now threatened due to a decision released Friday by the Supreme Court that undermines federal agencies’ ability to protect the public. In a landmark ruling, the court gutted a longstanding legal doctrine that has helped federal agencies carry out their responsibilities under the law and issue sensible rules — ranging from insider trading restrictions to fuel economy standards that reduce pollution and save you money at the pump.  But Congress has the power to respond, and ensure that agencies can continue to act to protect public health, safety, and fairness in the marketplace. [Will you sign this petition now calling on Congress to preserve our critically important consumer and safety protections?]( Â

The Supreme Court took aim at a decades-old legal principle known as Chevron deference, which has been relied on in over 18,000 judicial cases since 1984 and has given experts in our regulatory agencies the power to reasonably interpret ambiguous federal laws. It has enabled agencies to carry out their missions as Congress charged them to do when it created them, and issue consumer and environmental regulations that protect our food and water.   Today’s ruling takes authority out of the hands of the experts in our government agencies — the ones who decide which pharmaceutical drugs are approved, which chemicals manufacturers can use, and which products are safe for babies — and puts decisions like these into the hands of individual judges. This sets up consumers for weakened protections and a national patchwork of rules. It could also upend many of the health and safety regulations currently in place. That’s why Congress must act now to pass legislation that would protect us from this assault on regulatory safeguards. [Sign our petition to Congress and ask them to take action NOW.]( Â
