The Atlanta Police Foundation (APF) is building FIVE homes in Pittsburgh just for police officers. The houses, currently under construction, are on Bender St. Why are cops, who criminalize and harass us, being offered discounted housing in our community? This is at a time when working class Pittsburgh residents are struggling to pay for their rents and mortgages. We must demand that construction stop or that, if built, these homes go to Black Pittsburgh residents in need! In December, we collected 40 letters from concerned residents stating their opposition to this project and our demands that the housing be turned over to the people. We sent these letters to the Atlanta Police Foundation but, as expected, have not received a response. This project is an alarming continuation of over-policing in our communities. We know that police do not keep us safe. We keep us safe. Moreover, we have been told that the cops that are moving in on Bender St. likely will not be patrolling Pittsburgh. They'll be terrorizing other neighborhoods in Atlanta. If they aren't working in Pittsburgh, why are they coming to live here? Police are coming into our neighborhood to criminalize and displace working class Black residents and to create an illusion of "safety" that makes richer whiter residents feel comfortable. The police are moving to Pittsburgh to make sure that wealthier people will continue to buy the $500k homes on our blocks. They did it in Bedford Pines in Old Fourth Ward, and they are planning to do this in Pittsburgh now, too. We need your help in stopping this project! Join our campaign to Stop Cop Housing by signing up here: [( [Liberation Program & Stabilization Fund] As of November 13, 2022, the Liberation Program has been on hiatus in an effort to improve the level of impact of the service. Last year, we were able to provide more than 600 distributions of groceries, hygiene, and cleaning resources to families in South Atlanta. Now, we need more volunteers for the program so we can better serve our community! There will be two types of volunteers 1) Those who work with the back end logistics of the program and 2) Those delivering items and building relationships with those in our community receiving the items. We welcome your participation, no matter how much time you are able to commit! If you are interested in volunteering with our Liberation Program, join our team! [Current Events / Political Education] [A blue brain where the front half is a generic technology design with computer-chip vibes and the back is a generic human brain with neurons] AI is not Intelligent. Don’t fall for the hype. You may have heard about ChatGPT or stuff about AI art in the news over the last few months. If not, here’s a quick recap: A nonprofit called ‘OpenAI’ (which now has its own for-profit company of the same name) released a supposed ‘AI’ chatbot called ChatGPT. This tool allows anyone to ask it anything, and it will give you a human-like response. So you can ask it to explain to you a complex topic, like quantum computing, in simple terms. Or you can ask it to create a song for you, or to give you some recommendations, or even write a homework essay for you. You can make it do pretty much anything you want it to do (so long as it's not against their ‘code of conduct’). This tool got so popular that Microsoft invested $10 Billion into the company. Microsoft is now using it to add ‘AI’ to all of their services (Bing, Edge, Outlook, Office Suite, etc). Google panicked after seeing all of this and is trying to speed up their own AI projects. Unfortunately for them, they fumbled the bag with their announcement, causing them to lose $100 Billion dollars in stock market valuation. (As I was writing this, Microsoft lost 4% valuation after people began realizing how bad their ‘AI’ actually is.) --------------------------------------------------------------- Here’s where all of this matters for you: All of this is built up on smoke and mirrors. These amazing ‘AI’ tools are not actually ‘artificially intelligent’ … they are funhouse mirrors of our own intelligence (at least whatever intelligence can be found on the internet). But they are exciting and potentially valuable, so companies are already trying to replace real people with these AI chatbots. Buzzfeed is already laying off people and using these bots to automate their content creation. Schools are already having trouble with students turning in essays created by bots. Call center, coding, design, data analyst, marketing, content writing, journalism and even many types of teaching, legal, accounting, and stock trading jobs are all at risk of being replaced or at the very least will be forced to use and compete with computing machines that are both more powerful, but also more prone to mistakes that many people won't even question. And of course, all of this is just the chatbot stuff. Remember the ‘GPT’ in ChatGPT? That stands for ‘Generative Pre-trained Transformer’ and is basically the engine that also powers those AI art tools that allows people to type into a chat box and generate art. This same technology is also used to create something called ‘Deep Fakes’. Which are videos, audio, and other things that simulate real people or just realistic fake people. You may have seen or heard about Deep Fake videos of celebrities being used in movies or even non-consensual adult content. It’s not just online stuff either. These same tools are being used to create autonomous vehicles, actual robots, drones, and more versatile kiosk machines. So truck drivers, factory workers, retail workers, and medical workers are all potentially at risk as well. ‘AI’ is already taking over the world… and its not even (generally) smart yet. It’s just a really big calculator. I can go on for much longer talking about many other problems on this topic, like the [AI safety experts that got fired from Google for trying to warn people]( or the reddit community[trying to 'jailbreak' the moderation on the chatbots]( or the way these ‘AI’ [confidently get things wrong or just make up stuff](. But the point of this article is to arm you with the basic understanding of what’s happening right now. A lot of companies are spending a lot of time and money on creating something that is very, very good at reflecting the internet right back at us. They are trying to fool us into thinking we are going to have artificial intelligence that will bring us into an ever greater future… but really it’s a bunch of people getting rich(er) by stealing from our labor and selling harmful products back to us. These products will look better… but actually be worse for us. (Like fast food, social media, steroid-fed meat, and other technological ‘progress’ that wrap poop in shiny glass and metal). And this isn’t the first time. 200 years ago they said industrial machines would make life easier and better for everybody, but it ended up creating massive amounts of inequality, pollution and soul-sucking jobs. Almost 100 years ago, they said computers would do the same thing. But instead we got an internet that makes us ever more depressed, angry, anxious, and alone. Plus yet more soul-sucking jobs. Sure we got some benefits along the way, but not nearly as much as we should have. And most of those benefits go to the richest people while the rest of us get the rotten, sugar-coated scraps. What do you think will happen with these supposed ‘AI’? Instead of our jobs being replaced with more free time, we will have to find jobs that pay us even less for even more soul-sucking work. Already, OpenAI was caught paying Kenyans $2/hr to crawl through hundreds of thousands of terrible chatbot responses and make it less toxic. Imagine that as your new job: filtering tons of offensive, stupid, or violent messages all day, everyday so that companies can sell the idea that they built a super intelligent and polite robo-assistant. To make matters worse, these ‘AIs’ will make the internet even more toxic. Because they will give responses that just (re)create more fake news, conspiracies, racist, sexist, or just dumb stuff that looks more believable. So in 10 years, the internet will be like the worst parts of Twitter, Reddit, 4Chan, and more all dressed up in an easy-to-use, engaging package. But it doesn’t have to be this way. AI can be used for good. We could use these tools ethically, sustainably, and practically. AI one day probably will be intelligent… but it will take a lot more time, more transparency, and more thought to really make it good. As of now, companies are rushing to earn back the billions they’ve burned as quickly as possible. So you can bet that they are going to release ‘AI’ that is not even close to ‘done’. Imagine driving a car that manufacturers rushed out the door,.... But unlike a faulty car that only affects a relatively small amount of people, these fake and sloppy ‘AI’ are being put into products that hundreds of millions, if not Billions of people use Every. Single. Day. Sure they can and will try to fix things as they go… but the damage will already be done. So here’s what you can do to stay on top of things: - Get informed. Don’t just sit back and watch this happen, go learn how this stuff works. Look up people that speak about ‘AI Safety’ like Timnit Gebru, Robert Miles, and Tom Scott; or channels/podcasts like Tech Won’t Save Us, Your Undivided Attention, Team Human, The Verge, and Computerphile - Get involved. Play around with these tools to see how they work. But don’t be convinced so easily. Yes, it will be really cool to be able to speak to a computer and have it respond back like a human, but remember, its like a mirror. Just like your reflection in the mirror is not its own person, this reflection of the internet’s intelligence is not its own intelligence. - Get proactive. Tell others in your community about this. There is a digital divide that is getting bigger and bigger. Don't let your family and friends think 'it's just like the movies’... It is not. Its a lie. It looks cool, but it's incredibly dangerous and corruptive. Imagine if you could warn/stop p[e]( from getting sucked into those conspiracy theory Facebook pages… or stop them from going down the rabbit hole of YouTube hate videos… or from comparing themselves to Instagram models… or from being addicted to TikTok. You can get ahead of this by teaching people how to recognize when they are being pulled into yet another sinkhole of ‘cool’ but ultimately addictive technology. I think that we can indeed get some benefit from these tools, especially if we use them responsibly. But we shouldn’t have to be worried about being exploited and addicted to the tools we are trying to use to create a better world. We should just create better, safer tools in the first place. ~ Your techno-radical friend, Elijah Claude [Community Member Spotlight] Meet Dr. Pearl Lilly, PhD in Human Services [A picture of Dr. Pearl Lilly smiling while showing off her diploma and wearing a lab coat with her name and title "Human Services" on it] A migrant from the 'big city' of Lansing, Michigan, Dr. Lilly has been enjoying the intimacy of Pittsburgh on and off since 2016. She has a daughter and grandchildren local to Pittsburgh who have all had it especially hard lately. Just last year, on September 26, 2022, her other daughter, Sheila Manns, was murdered due to domestic violence. She was pregnant at the time of death and the unborn child did not make it. This terrible tragedy happened in the Camelot apartments on Old National. “That community is plagued with violence and sex crime.” Lilly explained how much of this violence is due to a lack of community. People don’t often look out for one another there. “I haven’t seen that here in Pittsburgh.” she says, comparing it to her hometown in Michigan as well. “Sometimes where you’re from is not your home. Living [in certain communities] can sometimes be a lot of drama and violence. But I have to admit, I have not endured that here. I have not been harassed or victimized. The people of Pittsburgh are awesome.” “But Pittsburgh is being left behind. Has been left behind. I’m seeing so much gentrification. So much wrongdoing to the people… the majority black people, here.” Dr. Lilly goes on to make an important distinction that can likely be applied to many black and poor communities. “I won’t say it's impoverished…. I’d say it's under-resourced. If we don’t have the resources, how can we better ourselves? Regardless of our educational background. Regardless of where we come from.” I then asked her if she got any justice for her daughter. Turns out, nearly 6 months after the crime, the South Fulton police department still has yet to investigate the murder. "Law enforcement has been horrible. HORRIBLE!" Lilly exclaims as she details all of the effort she has gone to get them to do their job. Or even open a case. “No one came to me, or invited me to come to the department to provide information that I have. Even though I forwarded about 60-100 emails to Captain Hicks, of evidence.” The medical examiners even requested subpoenas, and for the perpetrator to be brought in. Yet still she’s heard nothing from them. Nothing has been done. Three weeks ago, a new investigator contacted her, but hasn’t followed up with Dr. Lilly since then. She recounts all of this with pain evident in her voice. In her eyes. Still, she states the facts plainly. Recalling each name and title of the people she reached out to, yet has not heard back from. But the Pittsburgh community "has made it bearable." After we spoke, she even called me back to really share the beauty of the Pittsburgh community, "When my daughter died, people would come out to support however they could. Whether it was leaving flowers, giving us a few dollars, keeping us company, or praying with me, they gave what they could give. That’s the beauty of Pittsburgh. I never experienced that in Michigan, or anywhere else." [A close-up selfie of Dr. Pearl Lilly smiling.]She also talked about how important it is to see the humanity in disadvantaged people, like the unhoused woman Lilly considers as family. The woman struggles with HIV and substance abuse, but she always manages to come and help Lilly with her grandchildren, cleaning the yard, and even help when they were dealing with Sheila’s funeral services. “They have a story as well. They’re homeless, not inhuman. They have wants. They have worries. They’re just like us. We’re just in a home, and they’re not.” Dr. Lilly is working to create her own nonprofit where she aims to provide holistic human services to under-resourced communities. She has seen how certain organizations and churches only ever come to ‘help’ when they want to look good for the holidays or get tax write-offs. “It's unjust. There are families struggling every day. Why only come during the holidays instead of on a monthly basis, or weekly, or daily?” As I listen to her ideas and experiences around community, I am reminded of the way the Black Panther party focused on communal soup kitchens, conflict management, and skill sharing to create self-sufficient communities that did not depend on the state or corporations. She had so much incredible wisdom, compassion, and generosity despite, or perhaps in light of, all that she's been through. If you want to learn more about her, and the truly traumatic adversities she’s overcome, search up her interview with Voyage Atlanta called “Life & Work with Pearl Lilly”. Dr. Lilly wanted to leave everyone with a simple message: “It's time to wake up... If you don’t see what’s going on around you, you’re going to get left behind.” As had been discussed earlier, she echoes the fact that people in power are gentrifying this beautiful community. The money and resources that are supposed to be used to help are instead being used for cop city. Instead of our black communities getting the resources they need to survive, they are being pushed out. Wake up and get involved to save this community. [Submission from Prison] Ain’t No Way-Hoeza By: Funsway Himself “Grace to you and peace from [Yahweh] our father and Lord [Yahshua] - Jesus Christ, the Coming Messiah.” (1 Corinthians 1:3) It’s exceedingly implausible to be vigilant of the lack of acknowledgement, concern, or even recognition of our (the Black & Brown ppl) audacious ancestors, whom literally, gave [all] that they had & more, in order to stipulate & implement equality & liberty for each & every colored person in America. As I sit in my (this)- For although I may be assigned to this cell, I WILL NEVER, EVER refer to it as “my” cell, NEVER- now again, as I sit in this 6’9 prison cell, @ the wee hours of the night (0100 hours or later), on this wonderful Wednesday (now AM), I found myself conversing with my neighbor (a 36 year old Black male, that I’ve never saw or personally met) about this inedelicate system, and how it has completely manipulated the simple minds of our Black culture, forcing us to think that laws, judges and police are right, just because that’s all they allow us to know. However, most laws, judges, and police officers, (even some school teachers. Pastors, deacons, along with countless others) were stimulated or culled, just to infiltrate the minds of young, deprived, and confused Black minds, coercing them to deduce that, “this system” [HAS TO BE RIGHT] because it’s been like this before I was born; No one else is complaining; I can’t change shit; as a matter-a fact it’ll never change anyway, so I’ma make the best of it! These are the thoughts of the simple, the ones whom fail to do their research, and observe the actions and & affray that actually [LED] the African-American culture to liberty today. -Praise the Lord- The impeccable fights, sleepless, nights, audacious & extremely difficult decisions, and sacrifices implemented by phenomenon like: Mrs. Harriet Tubman- The wonderful leader & founder of the underground railroad; Mrs. Rosa Parks- Who refused to give up her seat @ the front of the bus; Dr. MLK Jr. -That preached equality, liberty for all, and made everyone vigilant of his “DREAM” that we all have witnessed come true over / throughout the years; Mr. Hank Aaron- the 1st Black MLB player, that endured death threats on his/family’s life [daily] due to his phenomenal swing, ability to steal countless bases, and, his overall athletic skills; also theres soooo many more wonderful, beautiful, & well respected person’s of color, that, literally gave their lives, risked the well being of their family members [daily], just for this ungrateful & misguided generation, to overlook and depreciate. I know these ppl gots to be turning in their graves as they witness the lack of unity within our Black (& Brown) communities today, as its absolutely ridiculous! I can damn near guarantee you that, if asked, not even 10 out of 100 90s or 2000s babies can tell you [anything] about Bobby Hutton, Huey Newton, Geronimo Pratt, the Jackson Brothers, the original establishment, purpose, & obligation of the Black Panthers, and what all they did for- & gave to- the Black & Brown ppl in our communities??? And I’ll bet my last dollar that 93% od this younger generation, has, little to absolutely no knowledge or understanding about the previous history & excruciating journey of our beloved ancestors. SMH. -AIN’T NO WAY The colored person is the most dominate human being that Yahweh has ever created, however, our mind & attention is easily persuaded by materialistic / counterfeit things, wishes, hopes, & dreams that sound / seem too good to be true (when that’s exactly what they are, too good to be true), NTL, we have proven that, we’ll risk it all, disregard it all, and maybe even sacrifice / surrender / forfeit [it ALL], in hopes / dreams of getting something better- This is [EXACTLY] how the white man finessed us out of Africa, the land that’s veritably, “flowing with milk and honey,” diamonds, rubies, and pearls EVERYWHERE! The White man knows that as long as they can keep our culture divided & partially against one another, than they (The White man), will [always] be in control, and able to dictate what goes on, and how we live in America- Big, big, big ole facts! Once slavery was abolished in the South, the White man came up with “Chain-gang” cuffing inmates together, forcing them to provide free labor as before, only now, they justify it with laws, decrees, & rules designed for failure fluent transgressions, that are usually & mostly, only broken by the Black & Brown ppl- the minority- enabling “the system” to lock us (Black & Brown ppl) up @ will, and work us [AGAIN] FOR FREE, but only now it’s LEGAL! Clever, exceedingly clever. Understand that, up until this very day, prisons are overcrowded with innocent or highly over-sentenced inmates that are still living in modern day slavery, absolutely. [Servitude]; working for the state FREWLY (or with little to no pay), making each state, and the whole entire system millions of dollars a year, while Black communities and others in poverty struggle to find decent paying jobs in society, never realizing the TRUE Fact of their jobless dilemma- Why should I (the State) pay [you] U.S. currency, when I (the State) have 100’s of thousands of inmates, that I can work for a little to nothing- produce & process millions plus. It’s troubling because, as a speaker & believer of change brings success, Amen, but fot some peculiar reason, the ppl of color, have yet to catch on to this implausible trick, as “the system” infiltrates helping clean up the streets, Black homes and communities, and also, taking innocent Black lives @ will, with little to no consequences @ all. Huey Newton, Bobby Hutton, George Jackson, or any of the other true & official Black Panthers members- or even any of their close associates, comrades, or allies- couldn’t be here in this time of age, because it would be an all out [WAR] going on rite now as we speak, Between the BP- Black Panthers- and everything with / wearing a badge, like DAFR, and I can promise you this, each of the Black Oanther members would’ve been elated to fight for our culture as before, never allowing “the system” or Whites to brainwash, belittle, ridicule, oppress, or ever persecute our culture, and it would’ve been a battle to the death of them, literally, with no questions asked. That’s the original heart, mind, and soul of the Black culture. Our ancestors lived to strengthen protect & provide for our own. It’s truly a disgrace to see and read about how “the system” tries to make the “BP” - Black Panthers- and everyone else that fought for our rights and liberty, look like the bad guys, or make it seem like they were all in the wrong, when, they were only doing what our culture needed them to do- Help, lead, and protect! Powerful Black men / women that were determined to live a peaceful, loving, and joy filled life, just like everyone else. In the “Land of the free!” Answer this: Why is it sooo easy for “the system” to change or stimulate a law[s] that will presto convict and deprive the Black and Brown ppl of their liberty, even if they weren’t even “hands” on or never did it themselves, (But was just there or around when it happened) as this is a charge listed under “party to a crime” But. after decades of cops taking countless Black & Brown lives, and numerous boycotts, and endless begging U.S. wide, “the system” still refuses to emend their own (Whites) by simply changing 1 law, that would allow police officers to be charged and held accountable for their indelicate actions! Have you ever thought about that? I have, dozens of times, because I am currently serving 4 life w/o, plus five year sentence for a murder that I didn’t commit, and police know I, “Funsway himself DA one & ambitions believer” didn’t commit [or never even began to ever think that things wold’ve ended how that implausible & irresponsible, extremely dreadful night- or shall I say week- had finally eased with a results of your’s truly, “Funsway himself,” was tracked down and arrested for malice murder- you know the rest after that, sentenced on Feb. 16th, to L w/o parole, plus 5 years. And that’s the wortest of the worst, outside of the lethal injection, NTL, “the system”, the same system that I’ve been in and out of since I was 8, has performed the fatal punch to my entire life- only nature life, as the system plans to hold, and control “Funsway Himself,” until I take my last breath on this side of the rainbow, Amen. However “party to a crime” has been the leading and most D.A. state & prosecutor charged & instantaneously convicted, sentenced, & sent to one- maybe multiple- of the most dangerous, insufficient, & unconstitutional prisons, or correctional facilities in the state. “Ain’t no way.” Now please, tell me, how in the world, can anyone ever hold me, you, or anybody else- 1 single person, one human being- one child of the Most High, created to do the will of God, and enjoy an ABUNDANT life here one earth, thru grace, mercy, and peace of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, the coming Messiah- can be charged or even accused of something that [someone else did, done, or will do]; “Ain’t no way”. This is truly an unbelievable process and procedure, that’s performed, daily within courtrooms all over America, accumulating the most charged, and successfully convicted trials “Party to a crime” in all of the “Country of the land of the free”- The United States of America. Can you actually believe that, but yet and still, theres police- high ranking officers- that are proclaiming to “protect and serve” that are cold blooded killers, who have walked away, free of charge, and a most are still employed with the law enforcement offices and will never spend a day behind bars for murdering someone’s son, brother, husband, uncle, dad, loved one, friend, or role model- “ain’t no way.” I submit this prayer daily, as I call upon the name of the Lord, asking that he wakes up each and every African-American, while the time is still near, open, & available; although times may become harder, more challenging, or a little more difficult, we must continue to call upon the wonderful and faithful name of the Lord, praying for wisdom, discernment, & true & sufficient understanding. If we as a culture, as an overall race, certified colored ppl, don’t decide to stand up, and fight for ourselves; no one will!!! “The system” plans to recycle it’s facilities, by coercing our young Black youths to grow up fatherless / motherless, or positive role modeless, in hopes [statistics] of them following in the same steps / cycle of the ones before them, sad to say but, statistics predict that they will eventually go to prison anyway, and this is what keeps “the system” and the thinking ahead “White man” paid, living luxuriously, and extremely far & beyond everyone else. However “Ain’t No Way”. I’ma just sit around and allow their cycle to continue running so sufficiently, please, it’s time that Blacks come together and flex our muscles for once in a lifetime, showing the world that we can protect, provide, police, [govern], and even discipline OUR OWN- “Tellling THE SYSTEM and all of it’s wealthy financers that they can keep their “slave plantations”, so called rehabilitation facilities to & for [THEMSELVES].- Free every African-American, Black & all Brown ppl. Ler’s be honest, how many ppl have these facilities actually rehabilitated? How many lives have they changed for the better? How many people have “The Department of Corrections” -The System- taught a trade? How many families have improved? How many ppl can they quote or recall agreeing that, prison made them a better [hustler, con man, warrior, dictator, illustrator, facilitator, manager, stager, dancer, writer, etc…] PERSON? The answers are inevitable. Prison is a waste of a colored man / woman’s life, it deprives the body & heart of the true peace, happiness, & joy that anyone should desire, degrading you so severely that, you maybe [can be] considered worthless, futile, viewed by others, whom label you “dead weight” or hoovers, and bums, yes everyone- except “the system” - “Ain’t no way”. “Ain’t no way,” our Ebony culture is still blind to these facts even with COVID-19 at it’s worst, monkey pocks, shootings, bombings, and frivolous wars. Prisons and government officials still refuse to release inmates that maybe could be / or already are, infected, even though they can’t properly succor or treat them, that’s down rite deranged!- “Ain’t No Way!” Let George or Johnathan Jackson would’ve been here, please, it would’ve been a whole lot of prison breakouts & escapes, in replete affect, I can promise you that. Those guys didn’t give a damn about running up on a guard, 12, or even a plenary courthouse about one of their own / Amen. Whatever happened to that type of love- Agape- support, and dedication? Why haven’t we witnessed or heard about anything of this nature today- in this 1990, & 2000 baby era… huh??? I know why: Blacks are too busy tryna shoot, stab, or kill each other [their own kind]; Blacks are too busy getting high, drunk, waisted, or stoned to be aware of these wicked & extremely, violate times; Blacks are too concerned about self, until self finds themselves in that same position [Down bad, Broke, Jayed out, stressed out, miserable, lost, hopeless, discouraged], then they/we wanna beat the next man / woman gettin mad, because we messed up! “Ain’t no way” Time is truly of the essence; and, I don’t know about you, but, “Ain’t No way” I’ma keep going for anything, no way Hoeza! I think its time we take matters into our own hands; reviving our ole times & original plans -Fighting for liberty, not just for me, but for all ppl of color!!! Amen. In closing remember, this is only the beginning, and if you wish to succor, support, or follow the progress and day to day production / presentations / programs of this “ain’t no way” movement as it (we) fight(s) for love, equality, peace, and above all, liberty, the sufficient and wonderful freedom of our Black and Brown relatives, then please, repost, share frequently, and submit honest, caring, and compassionate comments / suggestions upon our SM pages, voicing your very own opinion, thoughts, and personal dilemmas as well, allowing “THE SYSTEM” to see that, we as a Black / Brown ppl, are absolutely, sick and tired of being sick and tired!!!
