We won’t stand for these schemes to sow distrust in our elections. {NAME}, we couldn’t believe our eyes when we saw this: [Wausau Mayor Doug Diny removing a drop box]( Last weekend, the mayor of Wausau – a city in central Wisconsin – attempted to silence his own constituents by removing the town's only ballot box. The mayor, who ran for office on a platform opposing absentee ballot drop boxes, took the ballot box in broad daylight and said his actions were legitimate. [1] And this is not the first attack on drop boxes in Wisconsin. Voters used drop boxes to safely and securely cast their votes in 40 states, including Wisconsin, during the 2022 election and these were used widely during the 2020 election to support absentee voting throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. For the Common Cause team, protecting the 2020 election against those threats – and ensuring the will of the people was ultimately respected – is one of our proudest memories as an organization. But {NAME}, the mayor’s egregious actions mean we’ll need to do it all again and go even bigger this time. We won’t stand for these schemes to sow distrust in our elections. We have volunteers standing ready to inform voters of attempts to restrict voting access and point them in the direction of alternative voting locations. Right now, we’re fielding tens of thousands of trained, nonpartisan volunteers at high-risk polling sites across the country – helping hundreds of thousands of voters make their voices heard. That’s an impact you can measure – voters who, were it not for our hard-working volunteers, would have been denied their rights due to the schemes of anti-voter politicians, vote-suppressing online disinformation, or even intimidation at polling places.
