Neither candidate received enough votes to take home the seat, so now there’s a runoff election on December 9th to determine Houston’s next mayor. We need that runoff to give us a progressive mayor whose priority is the well-being of all Houstonians. Whitmire claims to be a Democrat, but he’s had his fair share of Republican stances: in May of this year, he voted in favor of implementing tax cuts for fossil fuel companies while excluding renewable energy companies from these same benefits. He has also expressed wanting more police and harsher sentences in an attempt to curb crime in Houston. But as research has shown, senselessly punitive law enforcement is not what stops crime. Rather, criminal justice reform is the key to creating a safer Houston for our families and communities. Sheila Jackson Lee knows that enabling climate change and supporting a more severe and expensive criminal justice system — along with many of Whitmire’s other questionable policy choices — are not what’s best for the people of Houston.
