It features games, but you can't game on it. [View in web browser]( [CNET logo]( Insider Oct 10, 2024 Oil Panic, but for Sleeping Were you ever a nerd as a kid? I know I was: Though I never had a gaming console of my own, I used to play Oil Panic at my grandma's house all the time. I was even able to "clock" the system once or twice (that is, get the high score). As an older geek now, I love kooky inventions — from [robots that look like tennis balls]( to [gadgets that fold your laundry]( — and so [Nintendo's Alarmo]( with its seemingly Mario-inspired moniker, feels like it's designed to appeal to me especially. For instance, even though this alarm clock is made by the company that brought you Game and Watch, you can't play games on it. (Perhaps this is something Nintendo will add in the future?) Instead, the Alarmo is a [smart sleep]( speaker, because of course it is. The clock helps you greet your day with video game music, but that's not all. It also has motion sensors and adds sound effects to its alarm as you toss about in bed. CNET's Bridget Carey went hands-on with the gadget and said the set-up process is particularly extensive and includes how big your bed is. Alarmo will track your sleep, but I'm not sure what Nintendo does with the data — can you get a high score? And if you jump in the air with a fist raised, does Alarmo go, "Da-ding"? Just remember, if you're looking for an old-school Nintendo fan who needs an Alarmo, it's me. I'm the one who needs one. And maybe it's right for you, too.
