How one Scottish isle takes being green to the next level. [View in web browser]( [CNET logo]( Insider Sep 24, 2024 Powered by Community Spirit Ever fantasize about running away to a remote island? I certainly have. CNET's Katie Collins and Andrew Lanxon recently escaped to an island themselves when they [traveled to the Isle of Eigg](. Located off the coast of mainland Scotland, picturesque Eigg is home to just over 100 permanent residents who have taken the idea of being eco-friendly to a whole new level. The island is energy independent, and its residents have made being renewable a central tenet. Eigg is leading as an example of a community taking charge of its energy destiny, Collins writes. Eigg's road to energy independence wasn't an easy one. The island's terrain made building a single energy grid difficult and expensive. A renewable grid went live in 2008, marking the first time the residents had access to a continuous source of energy. Today, energy is generated by a variety of sources (hydroelectric and solar both play big roles), but it takes the whole community's commitment to make it all work. Read (and watch!) more below about how Eigg's residents are building renewable futures — and how they're teaching others to do the same.
