Neuromarketing uses tools like fMRI (functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging) to observe the brain's reactions to advertisements and brand-related cues. It helps us understand why consumers make the decisions they do and what part of the brain is telling them to do it. As you likely know, studies have shown that people's decisions are driven by emotional responses rather than rational thinking. One landmark study led by neuroscientist Antonio Damasio studied individuals who had damage in the part of the brain where emotions are generated. He found that with their emotions impaired, participants found it difficult to make decisions. Even simple ones such as what to eat. With this knowledge in hand, big brands focus their ad campaigns on triggering emotions, thus encouraging people to take an action. Coca-Colaâs 'Share a Coke' campaign was one such campaign that tapped into emotions in a very effective way. The campaign, which featured Coke bottles with names on the label, wasn't just about personalization. It ignited feelings of happiness and excitement by fostering a sense of individual identity and emotional connection. This led to a significant increase in Coke's sales. Another lesson from neuromarketing is the power of visual stimuli. Our brains are wired to process visual information faster than text.Â
In fact, the brain can identify images seen for just 13 milliseconds, according to MIT neuroscientists. This is why well-crafted visuals in your marketing materials can have a powerful impact. For instance, Instagram's success as a marketing platform can largely be attributed to its focus on visual content. Its image-heavy layout appeals to the brain's preference for visuals, making it a powerful platform for brands to connect with their audience. So, how can you leverage neuromarketing? Focus on these three key areas: Emotional Connection: Craft your marketing messages to evoke emotions in your customers. Whether it's happiness, excitement, or surprise, emotional reactions drive decision-making. For example: Before: A general social media post for a coffee brand - "Our new coffee blend is now available. Rich, bold and organic." After: An emotionally stimulating social media post - "Can you smell that? It's the rich aroma of our new organic blend filling your home, turning a simple morning into an extraordinary start to your day. Make your mornings memorable with our bold, new coffee blend." Visual Stimuli: Enhance your use of visuals in marketing materials. Use images, videos, and infographics to grab attention and convey your message quickly and effectively. For example: Before: A product description on a website that's purely text-based - "Our new line of running shoes offers excellent grip, innovative foam technology for comfort, and comes in 5 stunning colors." After: A visually rich product presentation - Include high-quality images of the shoes from various angles, a video showing the shoes in action, and an infographic highlighting the unique features like the innovative foam technology. Each color variant could be shown in interactive rollover images. Personalization: Personalise your marketing messages to create an individual identity for your customers. This fosters an emotional connection and can drive customer loyalty. For example: Before: A standard email from a fitness blog - "Dear friend, Check out our new article on 5 exercises for a stronger back." After: A personalized email - "Dear [First Name], We noticed you've been reading up on strength training. We thought you'd appreciate our new article specifically focusing on strengthening your back. Keep pushing your limits, [First Name]!" By understanding what triggers your customers, you can craft marketing messages that resonate more deeply and drive more powerful responses. Embrace neuromarketing and take your marketing to the next level. GETTING 35M VIEWS ON TIKTOK Are you using TikTok to market your products or services? TikTok has exploded over the past few years with its unique algorithm driving people all over the world from obscurity to celebrity almost overnight. According to Social Sprout: - TikTok has over a billion monthly active users worldwide
- Consumer spending on TikTok has surpassed $2.5 billion globally
- 42% of all TikTok revenue now comes from the U.S If youâre interested in making this platform work for you, one expert I would recommend following is Jorden Souza. I recently stumbled upon a great analysis she wrote on how @sproutworld official, an E-commerce brand on Amazon, drives huge amounts of traffic from TikTok to their Amazon products. Souza analysed one particular 10-second video of theirs ([which can be found here](. That video received: - 4.6M likes
- 40.7M views
- 13.7K comments
- Was saved 306.6K times
- Was shared 20.1K times â¦all with a simple 10-second video. What made this video go viral?
According to Souza, the secret lies in the blend of several key elements: Intriguing Opening: The video starts with text saying, "POV: Itâs finally time to plant your pencil". POV is a TikTok term that resonates with users. The text then tags on an abnormal and attention-grabbing idea (a pencil that grows into a plant). Great editing: The video incorporates 2 frames within the first second, plays audio that was trending at the time, and showcases the process as fast-paced and simple, appealing to the viewer's curiosity without revealing the outcome. Suspenseful storytelling: The video hints at an interesting outcome but never shows it, creating suspense and maintaining viewer engagement till the end. High Viewer Retention: The videoâs ending isn't clear, causing viewers to watch it repeatedly until they realize it has ended, leading to a high retention rate and video loop. Broad Appeal: The unique concept of a pencil turning into a plant has broad appeal, which resulted in a high watch time retention. Viral Product: The product itself is unique and provides a distinctive experience, drawing in a large portion of its views. Emotional Affiliation Altruism: The video elicits positive emotions and resonates with a cause (environmentalism) that viewers can connect to, encouraging them to share it with like-minded individuals. Watch the video a few times and notice the different elements mentioned above. Once you have a feel for the different points, start thinking about how you can use these elements to market your product or service.
