Today, we're diving into some troubling news from the world of sports, specifically from the Paris Olympics. Imagine this: athletes, who have trained for years, show up at the grand stage of the Olympics only to be sidelined by something totally out of their control-polluted water. That's exactly what's happened at the Paris Games, where an event has been canceled due to concerns about the quality of the Seine River. The organization responsible for overseeing aquatic sports, World Aquatics, made the call to cancel the marathon swimming familiarization on Tuesday. This decision wasn't made lightly. It came after growing concerns about the cleanliness of the Seine, a river that's been the subject of much criticism. Many have been questioning why such a polluted body of water was chosen as a venue for Olympic events in the first place. To give you some background, the Seine is a major river running through Paris, but it's far from pristine. In fact, it's often where a lot of the city's trash ends up, especially after heavy rains. Now, you don't need to be an expert to know that swimming in a garbage-filled river isn't exactly ideal, especially for elite athletes. JUST IN World Aquatics has cancelled the marathon swimming familiarisation over water quality concerns in the Seine. Here is part of the statement: [pic.twitter.com/pban2xtCbL]( - Devin Heroux (@Devin_Heroux) [August 6, 2024]( Initially, tests of the water seemed promising. The levels of E. coli, a type of bacteria commonly used to measure water quality, were within acceptable limits. This led officials to believe that the water was safe enough for the athletes. But hold on, because things took a turn for the worse. Another set of tests revealed that the levels of Enterococci, another bacteria that can cause serious health issues, were above the maximum thresholds allowed by World Aquatics. This was the red flag that led to the cancellation of the event. [But here's where it gets even more concerning](. Despite this cancellation, the marathon swimming event is still on the schedule for later this week. This raises a lot of questions about how seriously officials are taking the health risks posed by the Seine. The concerns aren't just theoretical either. Over the weekend, several triathletes had to withdraw from competitions after falling ill, likely from swallowing the polluted water. Two Swiss Olympians and a Belgian competitor were among those who had to pull out of relay events due to severe stomach illnesses. Belgium's team even had to forfeit after one of their athletes became too sick to compete. One of the Belgian athletes, Jolien Vermeylen, shared her unsettling experience of swimming in the Seine, saying, "While swimming under the bridge, I felt and saw things that we shouldn't think about too much." She also mentioned swallowing some of the water and later said it definitely "doesn't taste like Coca-Cola or Sprite." Now, officials haven't directly blamed the river's conditions for these illnesses, but let's be honest-it's not a stretch to make the connection. Healthy Olympic swimmers don't typically come down with severe gastrointestinal infections after taking a dip in clean water.
