(The Washington Post, Education Department, The Chronicle) CAMPUS SPEECH [Tenured Professor Fired by Bakersfield College Receives $2.4-Million Settlement]( Matthew Garrett was a co-founder of the [Renegade Institute for Liberty]( against âthe social-justice dogma,â but Black instructors and students at the California public college said the group was engaging in hate speech and creating an unsafe climate. Garrett was fired for unprofessional conduct and unlawful activity. Under the 20-year deal, Garrett resigned. (The Porterville Recorder, The Chronicle) CAMPUS SAFETY [Penn State Fraternity Leaders Plead Guilty in Studentâs Hazing Death in 2017]( Brendan Young and Daniel Casey pleaded guilty this week to 14 counts of hazing and one count of reckless endangerment in the death of Timothy Piazza, who consumed 18 drinks in 90 minutes at [a Beta Theta Pi pledge event](. Young and Casey joined 23 other members who pleaded guilty; another was found guilty at trial. All also face a [wrongful-death lawsuit](. Announces Cuts of 31 Nonfaculty Positions]( The private university in New Jersey said the staff reduction, of mostly vacant jobs, amounted to 10 percent of the nonfaculty work force across all administrative divisions. The move was part of efforts to save $4.6 million in the 2025 fiscal year and close a budget deficit.
