GOVERNANCE [Michigan Stateâs Ex-Board Chair Made Explicit Gesture at Meeting, Investigation Finds]( After [months]( of [dysfunction]( on the [universityâs board]( Rema Vassar, the chair, and Dennis Denno, another trustee, were [censured at the March 3 meeting]( stripped of duties, and referred to the governor for possible ouster. At one point, Vassar raised her middle finger. She later called the move unintentional and said she uses that finger for many everyday actions. (The State News, The Chronicle) RETRENCHMENT [Penn State Will Consolidate Leadership at 11 Branch Campuses]( The move is [designed to reduce administrative costs]( as the Penn State system faces a multimillion-dollar deficit stemming from a 24-percent drop in enrollment over the last decade. Meantime, one in 10 employees on those campuses [accepted the systemâs offer of a buyout]( and will leave the university this year. (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, university statement) CAMPUS CUTS [St. Cloud Stateâs Final List of Program and Staff Cuts Mirrors Original List]( A month after [reductions were originally proposed]( the Minnesota university said it would eliminate 42 degree programs, not 46. The number of minor programs to be cut, 50, was unchanged. Among faculty cuts, 35 will leave after the 2024-25 academic year and 20 after the 2026-27 year, slightly fewer than the 57 positions originally targeted. (KARE, Minnesota Public Radio) LEADERSHIP [UCLA Names Julio Frenk, President of U. of Miami, as Its Next Chancellor]( Frenk, a public-health researcher, has led Miami since 2015 and will take office at UCLA on January 1. He will succeed Gene D. Block, who is stepping down this summer after 17 years, at a [time of turmoil]( on the University of California campus over [pro-Palestinian encampments](. (University statement, The Chronicle, CNN) CAMPUS STRUGGLE [Lincoln U. of Missouri Suspends Alumni Association for Finance and Management Issues]( The universityâs board also said it had tried without success to forge a good relationship with the association, and planned to form a new Alumni Council. The association was among critics of Lincolnâs president, John B. Moseley, whom a vice president [accused of bullying and harassment]( before reportedly killing herself this year. An outside investigation later cleared him. (KOMU, The Chronicle) CLOSING TIME [International College of Broadcasting to Close This Year]( The tiny, 56-year-old for-profit institution in Ohio said it would shut down in August, a victim of plunging enrollment.
