Plus: One year of no cash bail in IL. [View this email in your browser]( | [chicagoreader.com]( by Maja Stachnik|October 10, 2024 Good morning. We have a new issue out this morning with an illustration by [Tesh Silver]( who we’ve been lucky enough to [work with]( a [few times]( before. We don’t have the cover story (written by DMB) online quite yet, but a hot tip coming directly from the source: our PDF versions are usually posted on Wednesday afternoons, which you’re able to flip through at your leisure. [Turn to page 8 for “Chicago-style coalition building is alive and well.”]( Lawmakers and advocates with the Coalition to End Money Bond celebrate the one-year anniversary of the Pretrial Fairness Act. [Credit: Maia McDonald] [‘This is what safer communities look like’]( It’s been a little over a year since the Illinois Supreme Court upheld the Pretrial Fairness Act, making it the first state in the nation to end the use of cash bail. The Illinois Network for Pretrial Justice—a coalition of nearly 50 organizations working to end cash bail and reduce pretrial jailing—gathered to outside the George N. Leighton Criminal Courthouse on the anniversary of the law’s passage. According to state representative Justin Slaughter, crime rates have decreased since the Pretrial Fairness Act took effect—violent and private property crime rates dropped 12 percent statewide in the last year, he said—and the millions of dollars once spent on money bonds are staying in communities most impacted by the legal system. Deep Cut Pierogi is leaning into a spooky theme while slinging mole short rib pierogi enveloped in pumpkin dough, with black garlic sour cream; she’ll also be serving her beet and goat cheese dumplings stuffed with purple sweet potato and walnut, wrapped in spinach dough. Caramel-honeycrisp cinnamon dough pierogi with white chocolate razor blades finish off the trio—check out [some of the other flavours she’s come up with over the years]( and the spooky promo pics for this pop-up.  THEATER - Pulitzer Prize–winner [Martyna Majok’s Ironbound]( takes places at a bus stop in a desolate postindustrial section of Newark, New Jersey; it follows the story of Darja (played by Lucy Carapetyan), who emigrated to the U.S. from Poland as a young woman. Kerry Reid writes that the play “roots working-class immigrant narratives in rich and poignant moments in time where people dream of being ‘not here’ while also dealing with grim reality as well as they can.” Ironbound runs through October 27 at the Raven Theatre under Georgette Verdin’s direction.  MUSIC & NIGHTLIFE - Universal Light is a new trio using improvised melody and complex drones to craft a brand-new self-released LP. The group features fiddler Mike Gangloff, who’s played with Pelt and Black Twig Pickers since the 1990s; 12-string guitarist Jesse Sheppard of folk/psych-rock guitar duo Elkhorn; and southwestern Virgina native and cellist Kaily M. Schenker of Solar Hex. Opening the [October 12 concert at the Hungry Brain]( is a rare solo performance by double bassist Joshua Abrams of Natural Information Society, and local “power ambient” quintet Chord will debut new music in their headlining set. - Anatolian [psych-pop band Derya Yıldırım & Grup Şimşek]( make their Chicago debut next Monday at Sleeping Village. Their music reimagines the traditional Turkish folk music and Anatolian rock songs singer and bağlama player Derya Yıldırım grew up hearing in Hamburg as the daughter of migrants from eastern Turkey and combines them with original compositions, also sung in Turkish. They’ve also got a seven-inch due later this month on Brooklyn-based label Big Crown Records. [Jamie Ludwig]  CONTESTS & GIVEAWAYS Our Reader October giveaway is available now!
