What’s up!? I’ve been thinking a lot about how our families and culture affect our health. I’m pretty lucky that my parents have always been active, and my mom demonstrated her love for fitness by teaching exercise classes when I was a teenager. Oh, and get this… Marge got certified in Zumba at the ripe young age of 75! Go, Mom! So yeah, it’s safe to say I had decent modeling, which helped influence my health journey and fitness career. But the foods we grew up with were anything but healthy. Every day after school, I couldn’t wait to rush home for pop tarts, washing them down with grape Fago from the corner liquor store. Dinners were what you might expect in the 80s: cheese-filled hot dogs, casseroles, meatloaf, and then there were the frozen TV dinners. Regardless of what was on our plates, we ate together as a family, at least when we were all home together. Let’s face it: our attitude toward health, fitness, body, and nutrition all starts at home. We often repeat what’s passed down. But it doesn’t have to define you or confine you. And no one is more passionate about this than my friends Anne and Shawn Stevenson. [image]( I recently got to sit down to interview Shawn for the show. It got deep! [image]( If you don’t know Shawn, you should. He and his wife are incredible humans, parents, and dear friends. He’s the host of The Model Health Show and a best-selling author. Shawn knows health! But that’s not because he had great role models growing up. He rewrote the narrative of his life to become the pillar of health that he is. Check out these alarming stats… According to the CDC in 2022: - 60% of Americans have at least one chronic disease - 72% are overweight - 130 million people have diabetes or prediabetes Culture is defined as the attitudes, values, beliefs and behaviors of a group of people passed down from one generation to the next. But hear this… A microculture is our power to make changes in our own households and within ourselves. And when you learn to harness that, you take it with you wherever you go. It’s infectious, in the best way possible. Choosing to eat meals together without your face on your phones and the foods you buy affects your kids, their friends, and even strangers. This, Lifers, is how we effectuate change. Start micro. Do what’s best for your kids by modeling good behaviors instead of indulging every food demand as a way of “showing love.” Start small with you, and watch the fruits of your labor trickle down to not only the ones you love most, but to bigger circles so that those stats above start to reverse. Because, frankly, it’s inexcusable that America is the one of the wealthiest countries with the sickest people. It starts with us! Take responsibility. Your kids don’t know what they don’t know. So stop introducing garbage if you don’t want them to feel like garbage, passing those habits to their kids. I know it’s not easy. Kids are fussy, schedules are crazy, and convenience food is often also more affordable. It doesn’t help that most of their friends eat junk, and sometimes you just want to pick your battles. This is one I encourage you to pick. As Shawn says: “choose your hard.” Speaking from experience with two grown kids who care about their health, it’s much easier to do this when they’re young, and it’s never too late to start. I encourage you to start today. I urge you to check out Shawn’s latest book/cookbook! Do yourself (and your family) a favor and pre-order “[Eat Smarter Family Cookbook](=): 100 Delicious Recipes to Transform Your Health, Happiness, and Connection.” [image](=) Everyone who pre-orders from his link above gets some super amazing bonuses!
