Today, we celebrate Juneteenth to commemorate the day we finally cast off the shameful pall of slave

Today, we celebrate Juneteenth to commemorate the day we finally cast off the shameful pall of slavery in the United States and to honor the memory of enslaved Black Americans. {NAME}, In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. This marked the beginning of the end of slavery in the United States. However, it wasn't until more than two years later and months after the Civil War ended – on June 19, 1865 – that this news finally reached the enslaved Black people of Galveston, Texas and the last slaves learned they were free. Today, we celebrate Juneteenth to commemorate the day we finally cast off the shameful pall of slavery in the United States and to honor the memory of enslaved Black Americans. I'm also taking time to honor Pennsylvania's history as a thought center of the American abolitionist movement. Our district even served as a stop on the Underground Railroad, assisting many slaves on their way to freedom. While this day is a tribute to how far we’ve come, it also serves as a reminder that the fight for equality is not over. From the ballot box to education, systemic racism still exists in our country today. As your congressman, I will always fight to make America a more equal and just place for everyone. As we celebrate Juneteenth and commemorate the end of a dark period in our nation's history, I hope you'll join me in recommitting to the fight for equality. Thank you, Matt Last year, Matt Cartwright was one of only 5 Democrats to win a House race in a district that Donald Trump carried in 2020. He's gearing up for another tough re-election, and he needs your support to keep PA-08 blue. Rush a donation right away to help Matt protect his seat.
