Here’s what you should know about the drought across Southern Africa:   1. This is the region’s worst drought in four decades.   The drought is so severe, three countries in the region declared a national disaster this year – Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. In Zambia, years of hunger are the only thing Fennie (85, pictured above) can remember. “Every year there is not enough rain, then we do not have enough food,” she says.   2. About 20 million people are starving – that’s more than New York state's population.   The drought has caused a hunger crisis that is impacting a generation of children – millions are going to bed hungry every night.   3. Local CARE teams are there helping families survive.   We are reaching families across five Southern African countries – Zambia, Mozambique, Malawi, Madagascar, and Zimbabwe – with emergency food, upgraded water systems so families can farm year-round, drought-resistant seed and tool kits so extreme weather has less impact on crop production, finding more reliable water sources for communities, and emergency cash to help families meet their immediate needs. Our priority is helping families have food today and for the future.   Our best match of the season fights hunger with 3X the impact.   [3X MATCH – TODAY ONLY](   At CARE, we aim to help families and children fight hunger today and in the future.
