February 21, 2023 [View Online]( Good morning! Every once in a while, something that blows up online (by going viral, not actually exploding) surprises me by actually living up to the hype. That was the case with the grout cleaner featured in Today’s Good Thing, and it’s why I’m passing along all the details about it to you today! Also in today’s newsletter, you’ll find my latest book review in Jillee’s Pick. While Shakespeare features prominently as a character in this novel, you don’t need to be a fan to appreciate this tale of love and loss. Lucky for me, you don’t really need to know anything about Shakespeare in order to understand and enjoy this novel. Despite all that historians don’t know about the Bard and his life, O’Farrell built her story around two known facts: that his young son Hamnet died at the age of eleven, and that Shakespeare wrote his tragedy Hamlet shortly afterward. Using her considerable skill and talent, Maggie O'Farrell managed to use these facts to write a beautiful, if heart-wrenching, story. (I may have gone through most of a box of Kleenex while reading it.) At the heart of it all is Shakespeare’s wife Agnes, who struggles to carry the weight of her grief after the loss of their only son. I felt the couple’s deep love for Hamnet keenly throughout the story, and at times felt as though I was also mourning the loss of that sweet boy. Hamnet takes you right to the heart of what really matters in life, and if you’re anything like me, it’s a journey that will change the way you look at your own life and the people you hold dear.
