July 27, 2022 [View Online]( Good morning! Life has a way of humbling us when we get too sure of ourselves, but in this case, my humbling realization is your helpful new cleaning tutorial. In Today’s Good Thing, I’ll show you how to clean your ice maker so that you can continue to enjoy a steady supply of clean, great-tasting ice. And in today’s Beauty segment, learn a simple tip that will make your favorite fragrance last longer—both on you and in the bottle! Jillee TODAY'S GOOD THING It Never Occurred To Me To Clean This Before Now [Photos of cleaning an ice maker.]( Have you ever thought about cleaning your ice maker? I hadn't either until very recently! I've been writing about household cleaning for over a decade now, so I figured I’ve probably covered every cleaning task at least once. There are only so many rooms in the average house, and only so many items and surfaces in those rooms, so it's not like there's an infinite number of things to clean! But then a week or two ago, a friend asked me if I could share any pointers with her about how to clean the built-in ice maker in her fridge, and I was a bit stunned to realize that I had never written a blog post about. I was also slightly troubled by the knowledge that I had never thought to clean my own ice maker. (My only defense is that we didn’t have an ice maker until we got a new fridge a couple of years ago, so it's still a relatively new part of our kitchen landscape.) But after doing some cleaning R&D, I’m now ready to remedy this situation by sharing a step-by-step tutorial for cleaning your ice maker. While I’m classifying this as a once-a-year chore, you should do it ASAP if you notice your ice has an odd taste or smell. Get the easy-to-follow instructions below, and you’ll be enjoying clean, delicious ice in no time! If you’re still getting paper statements for your credit cards, utilities, and other bills, call each company or go to their website to find out how to switch to electronic statements. WASH IT WEDNESDAY Never Lose Another Sock In The Wash [Photos of various sock tips.]( One major laundry mystery, three easy and effective solutions. We’ve all lost a sock or two in the wash over the years, and where they ended up is anyone’s guess. But even if there is some type of paranormal activity going on in your laundry room, these simple solutions can help you avoid losing any more socks in the future. 1. Zip Them Up. As soon as you take your socks off at the end of the day, zip them into a mesh laundry bag. When the bag is full, you can toss it right in your washing machine. 2. Pin Them Together. Keep a dish of safety pins handy so you can pin your socks together at the top after taking them off. You can toss them in the wash just like that! 3. Go All In. Replace all of your old socks with new ones that are all the same color and style. When all your socks look the same, there's no need to worry about pairing them up just right. BEAUTY Make Your Favorite Fragrance Last Longer [A photo of Jillee applying fragrance.]( If your go-to perfume doesn’t last as long as you’d like, this simple hack can help. Good perfumes typically don’t come cheap, so most of us want to get our money’s worth by making it last. But when the scent doesn’t last as long as you’d like it to, you may need to reapply it partway through the day, which definitely isn’t helping it last! But this is one situation where you can have your cake and eat it too, because there’s a simple way to make your favorite fragrance last longer without reapplying. Before you apply your perfume, apply a layer of Vaseline or Aquaphor—any thick ointment will work—to the area of your skin you plan to spritz. You only need to apply a thin layer for it to work, because the occlusive ointment will create a barrier on the surface of your skin. This barrier will keep the fragrance at the surface of your skin longer, and prevent it from fading as quickly as it normally would. WHAT IN THE WORLD WIDE WEB Explore Everest [An image of a laptop showing the Mount Everest 3D website.]( You don’t need to be a climbing expert to know that summiting the world’s tallest peak is not an excursion for amateurs or the faint of heart. But for the average person, it’s hard to understand how difficult the journey really is or what it actually entails. Luckily, there's a great visual aid that can help you understand the reality of climbing Mt. Everest to its dizzying summit at 29,032 feet (8,849 meters). It's a website called [Mount Everest 3D](, created by German company 3D RealityMaps who specialize in creating interactive, photo-realistic maps using aerial technology. By default, this virtual map of Mt. Everest shows the South Route, the route most climbers take up the mountain. But using the toggle options on the left side of the screen, you can look at the North Route and other less common routes up the mountain. Be sure to check out the Trekking option too—you can see a day-by-day breakdown of the 8-day trek from Lukla, Nepal (the closest airport to Everest) to the Everest Base Camp, along with other popular treks in the Himalayas. I found it very interesting to virtually explore a region that most of us will never see in person! A FEW MORE THINGS... 😴 Sleepyheads, Beware: In Finland, today is Unikeonpäivä, or [Sleepyhead Day](. According to tradition, the last person to wake today will be lazy for the rest of the year, and should be doused in water as punishment. [In Naantali](, people gather at the city’s port at 7 am to find out which public figure has been named “Sleepyhead of the Year” and watch them get tossed into the sea. On This Day: In 1940, Warner Bros. released a new short in the animated series Merrie Melodies called [A Wild Hare](, which featured the first "official" appearance of Bugs Bunny. In addition to launching Bugs’s illustrious career, A Wild Hare was also nominated for Best Animated Short Film at the 13th Academy Awards. 🤔 Wordle: [Solve today's 5-letter word](.
