PLUS: My 14th anniversary of graduating from rehab, an easy way to clean your walls, and more. PLUS: My 14th anniversary of graduating from rehab, an easy way to clean your walls, and more. February 21, 2022 [View Online]( Good morning! We’re kicking off the new week with some problem-solving, specifically of the storage problems that abound in most kitchens. You’ll find simple storage solutions for bulky items, the stuff at the back of your cabinets, and more in Today’s Good Thing. And in a new Monday Motivation, I’m sharing the reason why I celebrate two birthdays every February 20. No matter what private battles you’re fighting, I hope my story helps you feel a little less alone. Jillee TODAY'S GOOD THING 10 Solutions For Annoying Kitchen Storage Problems [Photos of various kitchen storage solutions.]( Use these simple solutions to address your most annoying kitchen storage problems. 1. Bulky Items. We all have bulky kitchen items that drive us crazy—I used to have a potato masher that kept jamming the drawer I kept it in. Put up a small pegboard nearby and hang those problematic or bulky items from that instead. 2. Paper Towels. If counter space is hard to come by in your kitchen, there are other easily accessible places to keep your paper towels. Look for paper towel holders that you can attach to a wall, under a cabinet, or over a cabinet door. 3. Printables & References. Keep your printables and other helpful references close at hand by hanging them up on the inside of one of your cupboard doors. (The inside of a cupboard door is also a great place to keep measuring cups and spoons.) 4. Hard-To-Reach Corners. To make it easier to reach the items in the back of a cabinet, add a lazy Susan to your cupboard. Place the items on top of it, then just spin it to easily find and access items that would normally be out of sight and out of reach. 5. Small Items. Your kitchen cupboards can store a lot, but it can be tricky to keep track of small items in a big cupboard. Corral your small items together in a basket that you can hook onto a shelf so that it hangs underneath. 6. Mixer Accessories. After trying and failing to find a good place to store the attachments for my KitchenAid mixer, I finally started keeping them in the mixer bowl, which has worked out well! You could also hang them on a pegboard, or from Command hooks in your pantry or cupboard. This tip will help you get it done in no time. I know that “clean the walls” is going on my spring cleaning to-do list whenever I get around to making it, so I’ve been keeping an eye out for tips or methods that could make the task easier. And I came across one recently that I think is going to be a huge time-saver! The idea is simple—clean your walls with a dust mop or Swiffer Sweeper fitted with a microfiber cloth. Just spray the wall with an all-purpose cleaner, then wipe with the sweeper. The large rectangular cleaning surface will make short work of the wall, and you’ll be able to cover more ground (well, more wall anyway) in less time. If you’ve got any tips or tricks for cleaning walls that you’d like to share, I’d love to hear from you! Just hit “reply” to this email and tell me all about it. STAY SAFE OUT THERE Social Media Fraud Is Surging [A photo of someone using social media.]( Through fake crypto deals, phony romances, and more, scammers are making a fortune on social media. Reports of consumer fraud originating on social media sites soared in 2021, with the FTC seeing 95,000 consumer complaints about fraudulent activity on social media—more than twice the number that were made in 2020. On top of that, social media fraud generated $770 million in consumer losses in 2021. These 3 types of social media fraud make up the majority of complaints made to the FTC: 1. Investment Schemes. There was a huge surge in fake deals on cryptocurrency last year. 2. Romance Schemes. Scammers will go to great lengths to build relationships with victims they can exploit for money. 3. Online Shopping Schemes. Some consumers ordered products marketed to them on social media, but the product(s) never arrived. Here are a few tips that can help you avoid becoming a victim of fraud on social media: • Adjust the privacy settings on your social media accounts. Making your accounts private can reduce your chances of being targeted by scammers. • If someone you know contacts you about an opportunity or emergency, call them directly to double-check—their account may have been hacked. • Plenty of real romances begin online these days, but scammers can be sneaky, so don't send money to anyone you haven't met in person. • If you’re interested in buying something you saw on social media, search the company’s name with “scam” or “complaint” first to see what’s out there. JILLEE'S PICK The Best Of The Animal Kingdom On Instagram [An image of phones displaying various animal Instagram accounts.]( We humans are complex creatures living in a complex world. Social media doesn’t always show us at our best, nor does it always bring out the best in us. Navigating the murky waters of humanity on social media isn’t for the faint of heart, and it’s enough to make anyone feel like they could use a break. Luckily for us, social media doesn’t just feature human beings. There are plenty of profiles dedicated to animals, including some of the most charismatic and captivating animals you could ever hope to see! Here are a few of my favorite animals on Instagram: 1. Lionel And Lilo The Hedgehogs ([@lionelthehog](). I may not be able to tell the difference between Lionel and Lilo, but they are both very photogenic, whether they’re wearing little sunglasses or floating on tiny hedgehog-sized pool floats. 2. Pumpkin The Raccoon ([@pumpkintheraccoon](). Pumpkin was rescued as a baby in 2014 by a couple in the Bahamas, and she lived a very happy life with them and their dogs until passing away in 2019. Pumpkin may no longer be with us, but she lives on in my heart and in her Instagram photos. 3. Suzana Paravac's Quokkas ([@cruzysuzy](). The quokka (or short-tailed scrub wallaby) is a housecat-sized marsupial found in western Australia. Photographer Suzana Paravac’s posts are almost exclusively shots of these happy little guys, including some very cute baby joeys. MONDAY MOTIVATION Re-Birthdays And Second Chances Fourteen years ago yesterday, I "graduated" from a rehabilitation program for alcohol abuse at a treatment center called the Ark. It was also my birthday, so now I celebrate two birthdays on February 20—my “belly button birthday” and my “re-birthday.”⁣ When I begrudgingly agreed to enroll in the treatment program at the Ark, I was very much in denial about how long I would be living there. But 72 days later on the morning of my graduation, I found that I was absolutely terrified to leave. The Ark had been my security blanket for 10 weeks, and I had no idea what the future had in store for me. It was difficult for my family and I to adjust to our “new normal,” and I experienced my share of setbacks and relapses. But with hard work, the bad days grew fewer and farther between. I've often said that I should either be dead or in jail, and I don’t say it for shock value. But thanks to the incredible staff and counselors at the Ark, my amazing family, and my Higher Power that never left me, I got a second chance at life, and I'm trying to make the most of it. If you are stumbling through the darkness of addiction, I want you to know that there is hope. Please reach out for help and support, then fight as hard as you can to get sober. And if you have a loved one that is suffering, know that they might not be able to ask for help, but offer it anyway—they can't do it without you.⁣ For information about treatment for mental health issues and substance use disorders, call the [SAMHSA]( National Helpline at 1-800-662-HELP. Presidents’ Day: In the US, the third Monday in February is the federal holiday popularly known as Presidents’ Day, though its official name ([Washington’s Birthday]() hasn't changed. Since it generally falls sometime after Lincoln’s birthday and before Washington’s, many states decided to call it Presidents’ Day instead. Enjoy the day off!
