A clever way to keep bagged ingredients fresh, why you should ditch your lip balm, and more. September 16, 2021 [View Online]( TOGETHER WITH [Hint]( Good morning! Did you know that “reduce, reuse, and recycle” are listed in order of environmental impact? After reducing the amount of waste we produce, reusing things is the next best option we have. The 5 tips in Today’s Good Thing will help you reuse the cardboard tubes from your toilet paper and paper towel rolls in surprisingly useful ways. What’s not surprising is that yet another clever OGT reader has a brilliant idea to share in Your One Good Thing. If you hate food odors stinking up your kitchen trash can (and who doesn’t?), you won’t want to miss Kathy's tip. Jillee TODAY'S GOOD THING 5 Practical Ways To Reuse Cardboard Tubes [Photos of uses for cardboard tubes.]( When you finish a roll of toilet paper or paper towels, keep the tube and put it to good use. 1. Make A Desk Organizer. To make an organizer for your desk, remove one side of a tissue box and use it as the base. Then cut a few toilet paper tubes down to different sizes, arranging the taller ones in the back to create tiers for easy access. Glue the tubes into place and decorate your organizer however you like! 2. Keep Pants Crease-Free. To prevent your pants from wrinkling while they’re hung up, cut a paper towel tube (or two toilet paper tubes) open lengthwise, slip it over the bottom of a hanger, and tape it closed. Hang your slacks over the hanger and the rounded edge of the tube will help prevent creasing. 3. Secure Wrapping Paper. Tired of your wrapping paper unspooling the moment you turn your back on it? Cut a toilet paper tube open lengthwise and slip it over an open roll of wrapping paper. The tube will keep the paper in place and prevent it from unraveling. 4. Avoid Wrinkled Napkins. After laundering and ironing your cloth napkins, lay them out one at a time, place a cardboard tube along one edge, then roll the napkin around the tube. Store your rolled napkins and they’ll stay free of creases and wrinkles until you’re ready to use them again. 5. Make Fire Starters. Turn cardboard tubes into simple and effective fire starters by collecting dryer lint from your lint trap and stuffing it into the tubes. Arrange some kindling around one of your fire starters, light it, and you’ll have a roaring fire in no time. To Seal An Open Bag, Put A Lid On It [Photos of putting a water bottle lid onto a bag of chocolate chips.]( Keep bagged ingredients fresh and make them easier to pour with an empty water bottle. While I originally discovered this tip while searching for a way to keep chocolate chips fresh, you could use it with any ingredient that comes in a bag, like nuts, candy bits, shredded coconut, etc. Keeping the contents of the bag fresh is easy—just grab an empty water bottle and a pair of scissors (or a craft knife). Use the scissors or knife to remove the top third of the bottle, then set aside the bottom portion to use for another project. Unscrew the lid from the top portion of the bottle, thread the open end of the bag through the hole, then fold it down over the mouth of the bottle and screw the lid back on. Not only will the lid keep the contents of the bag fresh until you need them again, but you'll also be able to pour them out neatly and easily through the mouth of the bottle. SWAP THAT 🔄 FOR THIS Replace Your Lip Balm With A Healing Ointment [Photos of lip balm and Aquaphor.]( If you suspect your lip balm isn’t helping your chapped lips heal, that’s probably because it isn’t. If your lips are already soft and hydrated, lip balm can help keep them that way. But if your lips are dry, chapped, or cracked, standard lip balm can actually make things worse. That’s because many of them contain alcohol, synthetic fragrances, and added flavors that can actually aggravate dryness and irritation. This effect is sometimes subtle enough that you may not even realize it’s happening. It’s why some people find themselves trapped in a vicious cycle of constantly reapplying lip balm throughout the day without experiencing any real improvement. I used to do the same thing, until my dermatologist noticed the sorry state of my lips and recommended I try [Aquaphor Healing Ointment]( instead. I did, and within a day or two my lips were completely healed and hydrated. I honestly couldn’t believe how much more effective it was than any lip balm I had tried previously. And as if that weren’t reason enough to try it, Aquaphor is also inexpensive and available in most grocery stores and drugstores. Now that I know how much more effective it is at actually healing chapped lips, I keep some with me at all times. JILLEE'S PICK Cake For No Reason At All [A photo of double chocolate lamingtons.]( I was casually looking around online at recipes the other day when I came across one for [Double Chocolate Lamingtons from Australia’s Best Recipes](. Despite not knowing what a “lamington” was (though I have since learned they're chocolate-and-coconut-covered cakes), their appearance took me back to another type of cake from childhood. Back in the ‘70s, one of the types of Betty Crocker mixes you could get in stores was [Snackin’ Cake](. You mixed the batter right in the pan and threw it in the oven, and then once it was cool enough to cut, you just at the cake as-is. It was cake made for snacking, hence the name. Between the Australian lamingtons and my flashback to Snackin’ Cakes, I couldn't help but wonder why cake seems like such a “special occasions only” treat these days. It’s a shame, really, which is why I plan to make those lamingtons this weekend, purely for snacking purposes. What do you think—should cake have its snack status restored, or is cake better off as a special once-in-a-while treat? YOUR ONE GOOD THING Put Smelly Foods In Your Freezer, Not Your Trash Kathy has a great tip for preventing smelly foods from stinking up your trash: "Good morning Jillee, I love all your helpful ideas! I have one tip to help stop your kitchen trash container from smelling. When I have chicken skin, tuna cans, sardine cans, or any other food or container that has a lingering smell, I throw it in a small plastic bag, tie it tightly, and place it in my freezer until trash day. With this method, there's no odor in your kitchen trash container, outdoor garbage container, or freezer. Plus, it prevents animals from rummaging through it and making a mess outside. On garbage day, you just take the bag out of your freezer and discard it in your outdoor trash container. I hope this helps your followers." This is a really smart solution Kathy, and I’m so glad you chose to share it with us. I know about the odor-eliminating power of frigid freezer temperatures, but for whatever reason I’ve never considered using it to avoid stinking up my kitchen trash can. I’m sure other OGT readers will benefit from this tip too! Have a great tip or trick of your own? [Share YOUR “one good thing” here]( for a chance to see it featured in a future newsletter!
