Keep your floors clean with one simple swap, the most trusted brands for jeans, and more. July 19, 2021 [View Online]( Good morning! Or should I say aloha? Because there’s a lot of pineapple talk in today’s Jillee’s Pick, along with the interesting story of how pineapple ended up as a symbol for hospitality. Today’s newsletter covers a little bit of everything, from air fryers to denim jeans and beyond. And it wouldn’t be Monday without a new Monday Motivation, which is about the many shapes that strong women take. Jillee TODAY'S GOOD THING The Best Air Fryers For Beginners [Left: Jillee breaking apart a crispy sweet potato fry. Right: A basket of sweet potato fries in an air fryer.]( Interested in getting an air fryer but aren’t sure where to start? Put these five on your shortlist. Best On A Budget: [DASH Compact Air Fryer](. At just $50, the price for this compact model is hard to beat. And since it’s on the smaller side, it takes up less room on your counter and is easier to keep clean. It even comes in cute colors too. Best For Extra Crunch: [BLACK+DECKER Purify Air Fryer](. This model has two convection fans circulating hot air, so this is your best bet if you’re a fan of extra crunchy foods. Best For Families: [Big Boss 15L Air Fryer](. Not only is this air fryer certifiably huge, but it also has a nice looking glass bowl. Personally, I think it would be kind of fun to see my food cooking through the glass, but maybe I’m just weird like that. It also comes in 5 different colors. Best If You Have An Instant Pot: [Instant Pot Air Fryer Lid](. If you already have a 6-quart Instant Pot, this new air fryer lid is a great option. It’s handy because you can pressure cook something first (a lasagna, perhaps?), then switch to the air fryer lid to crisp up the top. Best Overall: [Ninja Max XL Air Fryer](. The interior of the basket and the removable tray are ceramic, so not only are they nonstick, they’re dishwasher-safe too. This model also has some useful bonus cooking modes like dehydrate and reheat. The bottom one is larger and has a black-and-white plaid pattern, and the top one is smaller and says ]( The key to keeping your floors clean is to have a strong line of defense at your front door. The best way to keep dirt off of your floors is to prevent dirt from making it inside in the first place. Your first line of defense for keeping dirt outside is your doormat, but many people fail to consider that doormats don’t last forever. If your current doormat is old and worn, it may not be doing much at all to remove dirt and moisture from the bottoms of the shoes of people walking into your house. Investing in a new, durable doormat is a quick and easy way to keep dirt outside where it belongs. SHOPPING 5 Brands OGT Readers Swear By For Jeans [Left: Jillee holding a pile of jeans. Right: Jillee posing in jeans.]( Searching for the perfect pair of jeans? Consider these brands that OGT readers swear by. 1. [Talbots](. This one is my personal pick. Like many people, I’m always on the lookout for the “perfect” pair of jeans for me, and I stumbled across them at Talbots while shopping for other things. The jeans I've gotten from Talbots are "just right" in terms of length, stretch, and where they hit my waist. 2. [NYDJ]( (Not Your Daughter's Jeans). According to one reader, these jeans "stay put!" If you hate constantly pulling up too-low jeans, this brand is worth checking out. 3. [Lee](. Many styles of Lee jeans have a lot of stretch, and I think everyone can appreciate a little extra wiggle room. Consider the Sculpting Slim Fit Pull On style, the Riders style, and the Classic Fit. 4. [Gloria Vanderbilt](. This brand can be found at retail stores like Kohl’s, JCPenney, Amazon, and even Costco. Readers noted that jeans from this brand are affordable, comfortable, and come in fun colors. [5 More Reader-Approved Brands]( [5 More Reader-Approved Brands]( JILLEE'S PICK The Most Welcoming Welcome Mat [[Top left: A door mat decorated with three pineapples side by side. Top right: A door mat with a black pineapple near the center that says ]orange pineapple in the center. Bottom right: A door mat with four black pineapples near the bottom that says "Welcome"." border="0" style="display:block;font-size:14px;max-width:100%;height:auto;" class="width592" />]( There’s no symbol more closely associated with hospitality and welcome than the pineapple. The fruit was more or less unknown outside its native South America before the 15th century, when explorers like Christopher Columbus arrived in the region and began carrying exotic goods back across the ocean blue. One of the most prized fruits from the New World was the pineapple, which in today’s money would have cost hundreds of dollars. The wealthy Europeans who could afford to buy one would use it as a centerpiece to symbolize their status and hospitality. (The upper-middle class settled for renting a pineapple for an evening.) Fast forward to today and pineapples are far from the rare luxury they once were. While you can buy a pineapple almost anywhere today, their status as a [symbol of hospitality]( and welcome remains intact. You can still see pineapples incorporated into the decor at hotels and other hospitality establishments around the world. Because pineapples are a symbol of welcome, I thought it might be nice to get a [pineapple-themed welcome mat]( for our front door. I found some really cute ones on Amazon, but I haven’t been able to pick a favorite! Which one do you like best? [See pineapple doormats on Amazon](. MONDAY MOTIVATION As Women, Strength Is Our Legacy “Here’s to strong women: may we know them, may we be them, may we raise them.” One of the best gifts my mother has given me in life was her insistence that I get a good education. She was motivated by Depression-era pragmatism to impress upon her daughters the importance of learning valuable skills so that we could provide for our families if it ever became necessary. I knew from a young age that I wanted a family of my own one day, but I also wanted a fulfilling career too. My mom’s encouragement gave me the confidence to pursue broadcast journalism at BYU, which was the first domino to fall in a series of fateful events that led me to this point, with a career I love and a business of my own. I filtered my mother’s idea of strength through my own lens, and once I had a daughter of my own, I realized that’s just the natural order of things. I knew that Britta already had a unique lens of her own early on, when she began insisting that I remove any and all bows (no matter how tiny) from her clothes before she would wear them. Our daughters have strength that may look like bullheadedness in a certain light, but our mothers felt the same way. Strong women don’t fit into a certain box—quite the opposite. If you are difficult to contain, it’s because the strength you inherited was tempered by generations of women before you. What box could hold you? A FEW MORE THINGS... What’s Coming Up? This week, download a printable that will help take the guesswork out of cooking, learn a clever hack to simplify making your bed, and look for a recipe for a light and fluffy gluten free bread. Why I’m Celebrating: Today is the big day—my son Kell and his bride Aliyah are getting married! I’m already riding the waves of my Mother-of-the-Groom emotions. On the bright side, I’ve done this enough times to know that I need to have at least two packs of tissues on deck (if not three!) LOVE OGT? SHARE IT!
