A few years back…  I had a somewhat frustrating interaction with a parent.  They held an opinion on skill development workouts that I think is actually pretty common…which is why I’m sharing the story.   I was organizing workouts for a group of players in Kansas City…  After one practice I came home to a somewhat rude email from a parent who was dissatisfied with the workouts because they were “too basic.”   Now, I was initially a little dismissive of the email…  After all…I was using the very same workouts that Don Kelbick used with players who became NBA Champions and Olympic Gold Medalists…  And I was also using them with a high school team that was nationally ranked at the time…  In fact two of those players (Clayton Custer and Ben Richardson) went on to play in the NCAA Final Four a few years later during Loyola Chicago’s “Cinderella” run.   But then I realized that this is probably a common view…and I could see how some drills might come across as “basic.”   So I responded kindly and made the following points…  The skills, footwork, and movements required to be successful are actually pretty simple…and players often-times make the game unnecessarily complicated.  You see, there’s really only a handful of basic skills that players need to master.   And from my experience (and from talking with quite a few elite coaches) the players that really excel are the ones that can focus their energy on doing every little detail of even the most basic drills exceptionally well…  These players can focus intently on seemingly minor details…like precise footwork…or visualizing defenders… getting into their shot as quickly as possible…exploding out of a cut… shooting the ball over an imaginary blocker.   In other words…it’s their ability to concentrate and fully commit to the little details… while repeating the fundamentals at a high intensity… and pushing outside of their comfort zone (and making mistakes) that enables them to excel.  To make this point even clearer…  This is almost identical to what Arnold Schwarzenegger says about the habits of great bodybuilders.  According to Arnold, the #1 mistake people make when lifting weights is that they don’t focus on the little details of the most basic lifts.  In his words…they don’t have their “mind inside the muscle” throughout the full range of motion during even the simplest lifting exercises:   “The biggest mistake is that you go to the gym and you go through the motions, but you don’t really have your mind inside the muscle….I’ve seen the guys training with me also for four/five hours a day but they looked like [crap]. And why did they look like [crap]…it’s because they didn’t concentrate…You’ve got to be inside the muscle!” Arnold’s practice of putting his mind “inside the muscle” throughout the full range of motion of basic lifts is identical to what separates those basketball players that can concentrate on every minute detail of a drill.   They’re able to put their mind inside the drill.   And the main reason I use Coach [Don Kelbick’s workout program]( is because of his philosophy of simplicity…and his emphasis on developing the proven skills that actually show up in games.   Also, the progressive nature of these drills enables players to develop their skill set with drills that build on each other over time…  And what frequently happens is…players are executing NBA-level moves without even realizing it!  So the bottom line is this…  The “complexity” of a drill doesn’t matter…as long as it gets the player to become proficient in the movements that will actually translate to better shooting in games!  Yes…these workouts require concentration from players…and a commitment to master a handful of basic skills…  But it doesn’t waste their time with some of the nonsense drills I see floating around TikTok and Instagram that won’t make a difference come gametime.   If you’re looking for a truly elite workout program for your Team, your Program, or perhaps just a couple of players…  We’re offering NBA Skills Coach Don Kelbick’s[“Attack and Counter” Workout Program]( as a Lifetime Subscription for the price of an annual subscription until Sunday July 9!
