This is Bloomberg Opinion Today, an early-morning post-debate edition of Bloomberg Opinionâs opinions. [Sign up here](. Miss Americana Eeek! Taylor Swift is officially voting for Vice President Kamala Harris in November:
Itâs no [ReputationTV]( but it is exciting. It was touch-and-go there for a minute, what with her very [public embrace]( of alleged [MAGA sympathizer]( Brittany Mahomes at the US Open last weekend. But the pop singer came through, describing Harris as âa steady-handed, gifted leaderâ in her [Instagram post]( She also opened up about her fears about AI, noting that a post of âherâ falsely endorsing Donald Trump was shared on Truth Social. Dave Lee [says]( the post marks âa notable moment in US political history â the most significant intervention weâve seen in the electoral process stemming from the fraudulent use of AI, though perhaps not in the way some might have predicted.â For kicks, she signed off with a jab at Trumpâs running mate JD Vance: âWith love and hope, Taylor Swift, Childless Cat Lady.â Swift said she personally tuned into the debate before posting her endorsement. I wonder: What was the last straw for her? Was it when Trump called himself a â[leader on]( as if he were a spokesperson for Miracle-Gro? Or did he lose her at the â[run, Spot, run]( comment that only registered with the [over-70 crowd]( Was it because the [moderators]( had to clarify that zero states in this country allow people to [execute babies]( Or was it the way Trump [conflated]( political asylum and [insane asylums]( Maybe Swift made up her mind when Trump [claimed]( that Harris âwants to do [transgender]( [operations]( [on]( [illegal]( [aliens]( that are [in prison]( in response to a question about [fracking]( Could it be that â[I have]( [concepts of a plan]( sounded [too much]( like one of her noncommittal exes? Or did all those Trump-loving [Wharton School]( professors get under her skin? It might have been the cavalier way he referred to Jan. 6 â â[J6]( Or was it that Hungarian Prime Minister [Victor Orban]( of all people, was his most credible [character reference]( [His buddy]( Abdul from the Taliban canât have helped. Neither did his [makeup](. Or his [sweaty upper lip](. In reality, it was probably all of these things, plus Trumpâs [pet-eating rant]( (which just so happens to [pair perfectly]( with the Peanuts theme song) that gave Swift pause. When one begins parroting [false claims]( about how [immigrants]( in Springfield, Ohio, are [eating the dogs]( and [the cats]( you not only risk sounding like [a crazy uncle]( at Thanksgiving; you also [risk losing]( a [celebrity endorsement]( that could make or break your political future: With a bumbling performance like that, Harris could have just sat there and watched Trump crumble on live television. But she was no passive participant in the debate, beginning with [the handshake]( she gave the former president at the top of the hour. âLetâs just say she understood the assignment,â [says]( Erika D. Smith. âIn 90 contentious minutes, interspersed with fact-checking by ABC News moderators Linsey Davis and David Muir, Harris managed not only to introduce herself, her values and [her policies]( to voters but also put Trump on the defensive in a way no other opponent has done in a debate.â Harris was correct in saying that Putin would [eat Trump for lunch](. But she failed to mention that sheâs [equally capable]( of [cooking]( and [eating]( him for lunch, too. Her debate performance was proof of that. Bonus Election Reading: - The Heritage Foundation is pushing its [deceptive anti-immigrant message]( and misinformation onto social media feeds. â Francis Wilkinson
- One topic was [conspicuously absent]( from last nightâs debate. â Bloombergâs editorial board [Hungry for More?]( Join the Bloomberg Opinion crew â Tim OâBrien, Nia-Malika Henderson and Francis Wilkinson â at 8:30 a.m. Eastern [on social media]( to discuss the aftermath of the debate. Telltale Prediction Charts Letâs talk odds. Although John Authers [says]( âprediction markets are controversial, and they disagree with each other,â the ones from last night clearly illustrate how Harrisâ chances are improving. Hereâs the PredictIt market: And hereâs [Polymarket]( Both charts point to a tightening of the race. âHarris made a number of points she needed to, while Trump largely [didnât](. On the economy, detail remains lacking,â John writes. Maybe theyâll get into some deeper policy discussions (heyyy, [climate change]( at [a second debate]( if Trump agrees to have one.
