Let me know if you’d like me to include you on the calendar invite. * * * In 2018 I had my first panic attack. I’d never had one before nor since. I did some self reflection (and saw a professional) and one thing I became aware of was this: In my business, I was trying to control too much… I was involved in EVERYTHING. I wasn’t delegating or trusting enough. As a result, there was very little mental and emotional margin left over in my work life. (Which bled over to my personal life as well, of course.) My control was also holding back my team — I wasn’t giving them the autonomy they needed in order to thrive. And this brings us to CEO habit # 2… Healthy and strong leaders continually eliminating stuff from their plate. They avoid as many small decisions and small actions from their day as possible. As you know, it takes a huge mindset shift to eliminate small decisions and small actions from your day. Why? Because it does not feel natural. I know owners and operators of multi-million-dollar companies who still have a hard time delegating. If you’ve grown up doing EVERYTHING in your business, then it can feel uncomfortable (if not rude) to delegate something that you could just do in 5 minutes real quick… But there are two very important things you need to know about giving up control and eliminating the small stuff… 1. Small stuff compounds. The more you hold on to the little tasks then the less mental energy you have in order to do think about the big stuff. You are doing yourself, and your team, a favor by eliminating the small stuff from your plate. 2. You will ALWAYS need to be eliminating small stuff. The cycle never ends. In a year from now, as you up level in your business and in your life again, you will discover new things to stop doing so you can be more efficient in the things new that only you can do. And that will repeat year after year. In other words: Give yourself the margin to show up for the big stuff. . . . My cheat-code for eliminating the small stuff (and forcing myself out of the day-to-day) Here’s what I did in 2018 after my panic attack. When I realized I needed to give up more control at work, this is what I did: I cut my work week in half. For six months I only worked 20 hours / week. And by giving myself HALF the normal amount of time to get my work done, I was FORCED to do the things that only I could do. Everything else HAD to be delegated or eliminated from my day. (As a control-freak who can’t help but micromanage and look over everyone’s shoulder, it was very painful to me.) But the results from that focused time were great… - I experienced a calmer work life with less stress and anxiety — I was liberated to focus in a new way. - I was able to spend MUCH more time with my family and in personal development, and I was far more present with my family (I was less distracted by work in my off hours). - As I delegated more to my team, we saw an increase in our creative output and business profits. - It gave my team the opportunity to take on more ownership within their jobs. - We had to develop systems for getting work done that weren’t reliant on any one person. Now, again, I want to be super transparent. I mentioned yesterday, these habits are not a magical solution that solves everything for you in your business. I know that first hand because it’s not always easy going all the time for me. There are times in my business when I am busier than I’d like to be. And there are times when I am stressed out, scared, anxious, frustrated… (sometimes all at once). But thanks to these CEO Habits, I always have a path and a system to get myself back on track. Habit 2: Focused CEOs plan and delegate The sheer fact that you’re running and leading a business is proof that you can solve any problem. And that’s the problem. You have no issue with doing the work — you will figure it out. However, if you’re the “CEO of Control” then it means you’re the bottleneck in your organization and it’s costing you more than you realize. Like it was for me, it may be eating up your mental and emotional margin. When you DON’T plan and delegate, here’s what happens… - There is too much riding on YOU and the most important things can begin to get missed. - You spend too much of your time reacting to urgent fires and dealing with annoying issues and distractions - You feel a sense of anxiousness and stress because there’s not a clear, proactive approach to the work that needs to be done. - There’s no strategy. Nobody knows exactly what to do or how to get it done. - You’re the bottleneck — everything has to come through you — and you can’t get any time to design the future of your business in order to grow. In short, everything in your business wants to stop you from accomplishing the single most important action that will move you toward your goal. When you don’t have a strategy and plan in place, then it results in distractions and other frustrating issues that take up all your time yet without creating anything of substance. However! When you DO plan and delegate the work… Then you can trust and empower your team. (thus removing you from the day-to-day.) It allows you to take time off without things falling through the cracks. You’re free to focus on what’s next inside your business — pursuing other ideas and opportunities. It creates a healthy culture and team dynamic that allows you to scale and grow. It means you can stop trading your time for dollars — and start scaling / growing your actual business. * * * From my personal experience, it is not easy to give up control.
