Election season is here! Do YOU have a plan to vote? Election season is here! Do YOU have a plan to vote? This time of year is one of BVMâs favorite (and busiest!) as we engage with communities across the South to help get out the vote. Some of our most important work occurs in âoffâ years like 2021, between a Presidential election and a midterm, when we support communities in showing up to take on state and local issues that have an outsized impact on their lives. One such issue is redistricting. Redistricting is the way we change the districts that determine who represents us, and itâs critical that those districts are drawn in ways that represent communities, not politicians seeking power. Gerrymandering and other tactics used by politicians to draw district maps to their favor is not only unconstitutional, it puts Black and Brown communities at political and economic disadvantages. Votes on redistricting are happening across the South and, critically, [in our home state of GA on Nov. 3](. Whether you're voting for new city council members, mayoral candidates, or laws to improve your community, itâs critical that communities get out to vote and elect representatives who truly reflect the will of the people. As part of our tour of East Texas last week, the Blackest Bus in America made its way to several colleges in the region. We visited Lamar University, Texas Southern and others to connect with student groups, understand the issues theyâre passionate about and build connections to provide lasting support as they bring their visions to life. Check out some photos of us Taking the Field: In addition to the studentâs leading the way in Texas, BVM would also like to spotlight HBCU students from across Atlanta who are using their power to demand improvements in their housing conditions. See the young leaders below who are organizing to create positive change: East Texas Recap! The Blackest Bus in America was just in East Texas to organize, educate, and elevate our communities. Our tour follows the passage of Texas S.B. 1, an aggressive voter suppression bill signed into law last month by Governor Greg Abbott. In recent weeks, weâve teamed up with young activists and led actions across the state to oppose and reverse the legislation. The bus stopped on several college campuses, including several HBCUs, to inspire, train and engage Black college students in acts of civil disobedience that can lead to real influence on campus and in their larger community.
