Prior to my weight loss journey with cycling, I was pretty sedentary. I tried all sorts of different workouts, including Zumba (which I still love), classes at the gym, elliptical machines, rowing machines, etc. After COVID-19 hit, the gym was out of the question, so I joined Beachbody, a home workout program. However, after a year, it became difficult for me to get up and motivate myself to work out, so I just didn’t. I struggled with general fatigue, malaise, and lack of self-confidence. I stopped exercising completely, except for the occasional walk with my husband. But my family has a history of heart disease, stroke, and high cholesterol, which definitely made me concerned for my health in the future. After hearing from my family that I needed to make a change, I finally took charge of myself. I joined WW (formerly Weight Watchers) on January 1, 2020, and managed to lose 50 pounds by October of the same year. I felt so accomplished—and then life hit. Two members of my family passed away tragically in November and December 2020, and I spiraled. Everything was just so much easier to deal with when I was eating delicious (though unhealthy) foods. I started cycling with Peloton in October 2021. I had several friends with the bike and I was intrigued, but never allowed myself to believe I would actually use it since I’d given up on so many other exercise programs in the past. Finally, one night with friends, I was talked into it. I went online and immediately clicked the “buy” button. When it arrived in September of 2021, I may have stared at it for several days before hopping on. Then I did a class, and it was game-changing! I’ll admit, the butt pain was the first thing I felt when I started cycling, but after a couple of weeks—and a good padded seat and shorts—I felt phenomenal. The feeling that I was moving my body, sweating, and enjoying the time I had on the bike was the greatest gift.
