Can tape really erase your fine lines and wrinkles??? (The viral skincare trend thatâs taking over) Hi {NAME}, Iâve gotta say, in my decades-long career, Iâve seen A LOT of weird stuff⦠But this viral skincare trend is right up there. Iâm talking about face taping.
Â
The practice isnât new, but social media has recently put it front and center as a DIY anti-wrinkle trick. Now, this hack seems simple enough... Pull the skin of your face back, place tape strategically to keep your muscles still, and BOOM! The process is said to smooth existing wrinkles and prevent future lines from forming. And hereâs the thing: it CAN actually work in the short-term. But that DOESNâT mean you should try it. The reality is â face taping can actually cause more creases, fine lines, and wrinkles down the road.1 For one, the tape lying around your house isnât made for your face. And it certainly isnât meant to stay on your skin for hours at a time, like face taping requires. Tapeâs sticky texture can be particularly rough on delicate facial skin. It can even cause dryness and irritation⦠the exact opposite of what you want! (Not to mention, if you have sensitive skin, the strips could lead to an allergic reaction.) Whatâs worse? Regular face taping can actually make you look OLDER in the long run. You see, everyday gestures (like smiling) are how we get laugh lines, forehead creases, and ever-so-pesky âelevensâ between our brows.2 But if your face muscles are stagnant â say, from being taped into submission â theyâre unable to crease, fold, and wrinkle your complexion. So while tape certainly helps to keep facial muscles still⦠It can cause those muscles to strengthen as they fight against resistance from the tape. And as they get stronger, they can carve deeper lines into your skin at an accelerated pace. So, youâre essentially fortifying the very muscles that cause wrinkles in the first place. Talk about unintended consequences. Now despite the potential pitfalls of face taping, I know this is a popular trend a lot of people may still be curious to try â including some BHMD subscribers. So if that sounds like you, I have some quick recommendations to make the practice as safe as possible:
- Use the face taping method sparingly (For instance, some of my celebrity clients do this in the nights leading up to red carpet events). This will help minimize the aging impacts that face taping has over time. - Donât use scotch tape, duct tape, or any other household adhesive. Instead, try a product specifically made for the body. Kinesiology tape â a flexible material often used in sports â is a better alternative. - No matter what kind of tape you use, always do a patch test to ensure you donât react negatively. This is especially important if you have sensitive skin.
But if you really want to keep wrinkles at bay, stick with plenty of sunscreen and quality skincare products.3 (Our [Deep Wrinkle Filler]( â which blurs the look of wrinkles on contact â is an exceptional option.) And remember: donât trust everything you see online. Afterall, creative lighting, angles, and filters can make beauty hacks seem way more effective than they actually are. My advice? Save your tape for gift-wrapping⦠And nourish your skin with the good stuff! Your face will thank you in the long run. :) Your Beverly Hills MD, Dr. John Layke
