I donât know about you, {NAME}... But lately, Iâve been on a real cleaning kick. (Is âFall cleaningâ a thing?!) And as Iâm tackling my inbox, I decided to revive an old favorite⦠Thatâs right â Ask Dr. Layke is back! In this email, Iâll do my very best to answer your most pressing skincare questions. (Full disclosure: I get hundreds of questions every day, so I may not get to them all right away, but please bear with me!) Alright, let's get into it. Iâve been seeing a bunch of videos on my news feed about double cleansing. Will it help me look younger? Should I try it? ~ MaryAnn B. Great question, MaryAnn! For those who donât know âdouble cleansingâ simply means washing your face twice at the start of your routine. This popular technique originated in Japan / Korea and has been hailed for its rejuvenating âdeep cleanâ effect. Plus, double cleansing allows your skincare products to seep deeper into your skin so they can really work their magic. Since double cleansing is suitable for all ages and skin types, it may be worth a try for you, but Iâd suggest sticking to a few guidelines: First, double cleansing should be done at night when you need to remove makeup, SPF, and sebum produced throughout the day. Second, be sure to stick to gentle cleansers that wonât strip your skin of its essential moisture. (Creamy, hydrating cleansers with shea butter and jojoba oil are my top picks as they help retain moisture without compromising the skin barrier.) Lastly, start with just once a week so you can see how your skin reacts. Because itâs so powerful, double cleansing can sometimes cause skin to dry out. So if you have dry skin or you donât wear much makeup, you may choose to double cleanse only when necessary. The key is to leave the skin feeling refreshed but never bone dry or tight. If all that sounds good, hereâs a quick double-cleansing cheat sheet: â¡ï¸ Apply a gentle oil-based cleanser to damp skin, slowly massaging in a circular motion. â¡ï¸ Rinse using either a washcloth or your hands with lukewarm water. Make sure the water isnât too hot as it can dry out your skin. â¡ï¸ While your skin is damp, apply a water-based cleanser and gently massage into your skin. (If youâre looking for a great option, our [Refresh + Renew Cleansing Gel]( is packed with ultra-hydrating nutrients and probiotics to give you a gorgeous glow.) â¡ï¸ Rinse off the cleanser and pat your skin dry with a soft towel and continue with your skincare routine. My grand-niece showed me a TikTok about âmewingâ that said it gives you a sculpted jawline. Is it worth a try, even at my age? Iâm 77! ~ Renata V. Iâm glad you asked, Renata, because I get this question a lot! So believe it or not, mewing has been around since the 70s â itâs a technique that involves pressing the tongue against the roof of the mouth. Mewing is supposed to improve facial aesthetics, define the jawline, and even straighten teeth⦠Which is a pretty tall order for one tiny move, if you ask me. And like many âquick-fixâ viral trends, when it comes to actually re-shaping your jawline, thereâs little evidence to support mewing does much at all. You see, facial restructuring is a complex process that involves moving your facial bones and soft tissue⦠So changing your tongue's resting position isn't enough to âre-shapeâ your face... Even the slightest improvements could take YEARS â and are unlikely to last. So unfortunately, mewing is too good to be true. Short of surgery, the best way to get that sculpted jawline look is through healthy habits: plenty of water, restful sleep, and a potent âgravity-fighterâ like [Lift + Firm Sculpting Cream.]( :) I went to the beach with my family yesterday and accidentally got a little sunburnt. Now Iâm puffy and swollen!! Any tricks to depuff in a pinch? S.O.S! - Ginny A. Ouch, Ginny! That sounds painful. But hereâs the good news: there is an effective DIY way to cool your skin and calm inflammation⦠And it DOESNâT involve ice or aloe vera! Do you remember how in old movies people would put cucumbers over their eyes when they were at the spa? Well, thatâs not just a Hollywood trick⦠Because cucumbers have some incredible nourishing properties for your skin â and can reduce puffiness, redness, and irritation. Not only are cucumbers ultra-soothing and hydrating, but theyâre rich in antioxidants and vitamins A & C, which can help your skin repair faster. Hereâs my favorite way to use them when my skin needs a boost: ~ Cut a cucumber into 4-5 small chunks, wrap each in plastic wrap, and stick in your freezer overnight. ~ ~ In the morning, grab one of the chunks and peel back the plastic wrap, exposing the flat edge of the cucumber ~ ~ Move the cucumber in an âupward and outward,â motion all over your cheeks, forehead, lips, neck, and chest. ~
After a few minutes, toss the cucumber (to avoid any bacteria transfer), and use a fresh chunk from the freezer whenever you need a quick pick-me-up. Your skin should feel an instant cooling, nourishing relief, so you can get back to a healthy glow in no time! Can I add water to my skincare products to make them last longer? ~ Joanne F. Okay, this is a tough one. So adding water to stretch out the lifespan of liquid soaps and shampoos is one of those popular tricks thatâs been around for ages⦠But unfortunately, I do not recommend this when it comes to skincare⦠Because it can actually be HARMFUL. See, skincare formulas are carefully concocted with specific proportions â in fact, here at Beverly Hills MD we spend years perfecting them⦠So even small amounts of water mixed into the compounds can throw off the carefully balanced concentrations. And this not only makes them less effective⦠But also potentially introduces new bacteria that can wind up on your skin and lead to irritation and infection. Now let me be clear: This does NOT mean that skincare products that contain water are bad or unsafe. The difference is that the water in these products isnât regular tap water or even filtered water⦠Itâs special deionized (purified) water â so itâs ultra-clean. So while it may be tempting to stretch your bottles to the very last drop, I assure you the payoff isnât worth it. My advice? Stock up regularly on your favorite formulas, or opt for subscriptions (like our Subscribe & Save) for monthly shipments, so you never lose your gorgeous glow. Alright, thatâs all I have for todayâs Q&A session! But keep those questions coming. And remember this is a safe space, so no question is too silly or off-limits. Iâll be back for more very soon. Until next time! Your Beverly Hills MD, Dr. John Layke
