One of my favorite âcopywritersâ is McGruff the crime dog. I doubt anyone will ever know, or that it could even be tracked, how much crime that cartoon has prevented, how many children he saved from would-be kidnappers & deviants wanting to molest & rape them, and how many drug dealers & other criminal scum were foiled due to his campaigns. A true master of Jim Camp's use of Vision to influence & persuade. Some interesting facts about the gruffy one: Heâs been all over TV, the media, even in the White House for over 40 years. 1500+ law enforcement agencies educate children about crime prevention with him. And it proved to be so successful a campaign right off the bat that it garnered over $100 million in free air time donated in the first year, reaching over 50% of adults. Today? There are over 4,000 active McGruffs (number of costumes in use). And McGruff also is a character unto himself, with a distinct personality who loves to âhamâ it up doing PSAâs and making thousands of appearances at community and school events, and on radio and television. Frankly, he is so âOtherworldly popularâ that⦠8 out of 10 children and 9 out of 10 adults recognize him. Heâs almost like the âMister Rogersâ of crime prevention. Children even write him letters, tell him stories, and ask for his autograph. And you can agree with me or not on this: But I seriously doubt heâd have been nearly as popular if he was just a regular flesh & blood human or guy in a costume instead of a dramatic cartoon persona. Something literally any business can model, be inspired by, learn from. And before you ask: No, you donât have to be a McGruff-level character to make this kind of thing work for your business. I have been doing it on a very small scale for almost 20 years. (i.e., Email Players comicbook character & assorted villains, many of which I created and worked into my daily emails as far back as 2009, and various antics I did related to this before that). And on a bigger scale look at someone like the infamous Rich Jerk. Point is this: If you want to add a thick new layer of raw engagement to your persona (online or offline), your emails, sales copy, and other marketing endeavors you can do a lot worse than creating your own cartoon avatar/characters. A great way to inherently stick out in a plain vanilla marketplace. As for how to go about this? The November Email Players issue enters the chat: Doing comics & cartoons is just one of several ways I teach up inside the November issue to tap into a very powerful âforceâ of influence & persuasion that can ramp up your engagement, sales, and just the overall fun & experience people have buying from you or hiring you. And while I donât give a dissertation on the subject, it can get you started. Simply follow my suggestions inside, apply, and then, from there, youâll see further. This sort of thing does not come easy to most. And even those who think theyâre doing it (like the assorted cartoon personas on Twitter â all boring, unmemorable, with many just parasites off other brands⦠total broccoli-head level small thinking) are doing it totally wrong, with no real foundation. The guys who figured this out for business lived 100 years ago. Like, for example, Leo Burnett (Jolly Green Giant, etc). Itâs almost like a lost art today. And again, I donât give a masterclass on the subject inside. But, I do give the foundational stuff that any business with the desire to win and the ability to think and problem solve can use to start tapping into this powerful way of growing a business and enhancing the likability of a brand. The deadline to subscribe is today. Time ainât on your side on this. But then again, if youâre a procrastinator then youâre dead in the water anyway. The future belongs to those who show up and seize it. Not the ones who sit around thinking about it.
