The challenge with mastery is that it’s hard and takes a long time (like a really long time). So instead of mastery, many people allow themselves to stop growing and just be good enough — however they define that. But instead of settling for good enough, here are a few reasons you should pick an area of your life (a skill, a hobby, or something entirely new) and commit to mastering it. DISCIPLINE DOES YOU GOOD The general rule of thumb is that it takes about 10,000 hours to master something — roughly 10 years of consistent practice. That means you have to show up and punch the clock every day. That discipline turns into habits, which can help reframe your perspective. Instead of focusing on external things, such as how people will perceive you, that discipline helps you focus solely on the work — and that’s always a good headspace to be in. MASTERY IS MORE FUN Sure, it will be frustrating and challenging at times, but the better you get at something, the more fun it becomes. And you deserve to have more fun. IT OPENS NEW DOORS When you focus on mastery, you meet new people — from teachers to other people pursuing the same goal as you. These are all people you wouldn’t have otherwise met. And generally speaking, meeting more people usually isn’t a bad thing. ACCOMPLISHMENT Accolades and awards are great, but the positive feelings of winning awards and being recognized don’t last all that long. What does last are the skills and sense of accomplishment you develop in pursuit of mastery. So, if you want to keep on growing, commit to mastery.
