Weâll use the 4 elements of all effective emails [The Writer’ s Life](
January 24, 2024 "Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the real greats make you feel that you, too, can be great."
– Mark Twain Hi {NAME}! The last couple of days I've been telling you about the incredible demand for professional email writers … Why it's one of the EASIEST ways for new writers to break in … And the generous fees you can receive for these quick, exciting projects. (Just imagine earning $300 for less than an hour of work!) Today, I want to get more into the "HOW" … And break down the four essential elements ALL effective emails need. You can use this structure for clients you already have … Or if you're ready to break in, use this same structure to GET email clients. 😉 #doubledipping In fact, I challenge you to write a prospecting email with me, right now. Open up a blank document and I'll guide you through every step. (You may be surprised at how much of this you already instinctively do!) Element #1: The Attention Grabber Even though they're more private than social media platforms, email inboxes are still crowded places. Your email is competing for attention … and you need it to stand out to get opened. So, you want a strong subject line and smooth opening lines to draw them in to the meat of the message (Element #2). We go DEEP into attention-grabbing in our bestselling training, [How to Write High-Impact Emails](. But for your purposes, here's a couple of prompts for compelling subject lines: - Give a clear benefit. This one's easy! Give them a reason to open your email. Will it solve a problem? Save them time or money? Resolve pain? Be direct.
- Stir up curiosity. Is there a mystery afoot? How about a surprising missing key to a painful problem they have? Tease solutions in the subject line.
- Start a story (and don't finish it 'til the end). Human psychology is hard-wired for stories. We get itchy if we don't hear the end. This is a playful way to make sure your whole email gets read. 😄
- Say the OPPOSITE of what's expected. For example, I may use the subject line "10 reasons I HATE email" … after spending the day before explaining why I love it. Now, it's your turn. You're trying to land an email client … with a really well-written email. You know they need consistent emails written … and it's a pain point to keep their email hopper full. What would you write in the subject line to speak to that need … and hint to YOU as the solution? Just write freely … Don't worry too much about being perfect, right now. You can edit to your heart's content later. Brainstorm 5 to 10 subject lines, then come back. Element #2: The "So What?" Effective emails get right to the point. This section is the meat of the matter … the REASON you're writing. As A-list copywriter Bob Bly would say, "Why are you bothering people with this?" You want to take enough space to thoroughly explain your message, while still being succinct. To do this, keep asking yourself the question, "So what? Why is that important?" And when you feel like you've delivered your message — stop. Now, head back to your document. Why are you writing to this very busy marketer or business owner? Why is your offer important to them? Go ahead and free-flow … and keep asking yourself, "So what?" … until you've made your point. Then, come back here. Element #3: The "Why Me, Why Now?" Many new email writers miss this element. They try to make the email about THEM (or the company they're writing for). You can't be "me-focused." You've got to make your message relevant to the reader. Why is it important to them, specifically? If they don't "resonate" with your message, or see how it personally benefits them, they'll delete your email without thinking twice. Then — why is it important NOW? If there's no sense of urgency, it's too tempting to "save it for later." And as a busy person yourself, you understand: "Later" usually means "never." That's why you want to jump your idea up to the top of their to-do list — without sounding hype-y or exaggerating. [>> Need an example of how to do this? I demonstrate all four elements with a successful AWAI email here!]( In your draft email, answer those questions: - Why is your email service important to them, personally?
- Why is it urgent or timely? Again, don't worry if it's "good enough." Just brainstorm. Then come back! Element #4: The Call to Action (CTA) Every piece of persuasive writing asks the reader to DO something at the end. And if they've been successfully persuaded, it should be a "no-brainer"! Emails are no different. So, what do you want your prospective client to do next? Hire you right off the bat? Probably not … that's "too much" to ask, right? You want your CTAs to feel like the next obvious step. They should be emotionally easy, without too much risk. So, what's the next obvious step? Do you want them to write you back, letting you know if they work with freelancers and what their needs are? Would jumping on Zoom for a 15-minute call to see if you're the right fit for each other be beneficial? Something else? Get creative! See what comes to you naturally in your brainstorming state. But before you take that step of reaching out to clients, you may want to check out an [exciting training]( program we've created specifically for NEW writers.
