AI is a great tool⦠but it simply canât do everything⦠[The Writer’ s Life](
July 19, 2023 "People will forget the things you do, and people will forget the things you say.
But people will never forget how you made them feel."
– Maya Angelou Hi {NAME}, My friend and colleague Nick Usborne has been a pioneer in our industry — over and over again. He focused solely on writing for the Web 26 years ago when no one was thinking about how and why it was so different. And he was a leader in embracing and getting paid to write for social media, Web3, chatbots, and so much more in the ever-expanding digital marketplace. Now, he's an early pioneer in the AI frontier. And while he's embracing [what the tools of AI (like ChatGPT) can do to greatly benefit writers](, he's also aware of their limitations. Put simply: there are things AI can't do. Today, Nick's here to help you better understand what AI can do — and why you as a writer still have a vital role to play. It's an entertaining take I think you'll enjoy! Nick has a unique way of teaching that always brings clarity to any situation. It's no wonder he's always a fan favorite at our annual [Copywriting Success & Getting Clients Bootcamp]( … and I expect this year to be no different when he takes the stage in October! Guillermo Rubio is another very early adopter of AI and ChatGPT (and also a fan favorite who will be taking the stage at Bootcamp this year!). G, as we lovingly call him, has been using it in his copywriting work for over two years and he says it's made him a better, more prolific writer. And it sure has made him more productive … I often wondered how he could turn out way more copy than any other writer each month. G's one of the key voices in our industry pointing out that you can use the power of AI to be a faster, better, and higher-paid writer! When you can harness AI, you can boost your output while delivering high-quality copy to your clients. It's just a matter of knowing HOW to use it effectively … [And G's new in-depth AI training program teaches you just that!]( This is your chance to learn from the ONLY copywriter we know who has been using AI to boost his writing productivity and income (as I mentioned earlier, for TWO years now!). By Nick Usborne [ice cream cone pictured on laptop screen] Everyone is talking about AI right now. ChatGPT in particular. I get it. I really do. I've been using ChatGPT extensively myself. I use it for brainstorming, research, and throwing down some first drafts. And some of those first drafts are pretty darn good. Tweak your prompts a bit, and they get even better. Using AI as a work buddy and writing tool makes a ton of sense. Your productivity will go way up. You'll learn stuff you didn't know before. But AI can't do everything. To my point in the headline … bots can't eat ice cream. They can't taste. They can't remember the time the whole family went to the beach and lined up at the ice cream van. They can't remember when a seagull swooped down and stole your dad's ice cream from his hands. They can't understand why the rest of you laughed so hard when you saw the look on your dad's face. Sure, ChatGPT can read books about human emotion. But it can't experience those emotions. It can't experience the world firsthand through the five senses. It has no store of family memories and personal stories. AI tools may know a ton of facts. They may be able to write. But when it comes to feeling emotion firsthand, they're as dumb as a sack of rocks. AI Alone Isn't Enough … You Need to Add Some EI as Well EI? That's short for Emotional Intelligence. Daniel Goleman wrote the book, Emotional Intelligence back in 1995. In the book, he challenges the assumption that the only important measure of intelligence is the traditional one. Drawing on research in psychology and neuroscience, his book opened our eyes to the fact that IQ alone is not enough to ensure we succeed in life, and have a happy life. In fact, it turns out that people with high EI can do way better in life and business than people with a high IQ, but low EI. Emotion matters. Daniel Goleman breaks things down into four domains: Self-Awareness is about understanding your own emotions, and how they impact other people. Self-Regulation is about managing your own emotions effectively, and responding appropriately in emotionally charged situations. Social Awareness is about being aware of other people's emotions, and showing empathy. Relationship Management brings it all together, helping you use emotional awareness to build stronger relationships, both at home and at work. Think all that through, and you can see how powerful a high level of Emotional Intelligence can be. And while discussions about EI often focus on how we handle ourselves in the presence of other people, the same principles can be applied to writing copy and content online. Good Copywriters Already Know That Emotion Lies at the Heart of Great Copy Great copywriters always work to evoke emotional responses from their readers. They understand that emotion is a powerful trigger. It's the reader's emotional response to copy that makes them click that buy button, or not. And while many copywriters have likely not read Daniel Goleman's book, they intuitively understand the four domains of EI we just looked at. Smart copywriters are aware of how they feel about a particular product or service. And if need be, they'll regulate or manage their own feelings. As an example, I might be writing copy for hunting vacations. I'm not a hunter myself. But I need to put aside any personal feelings on the subject if I want to write good copy. This is also where empathy comes in. I have to recognize the legitimate emotions of people who love to go hunting. I have to put myself in their shoes, and identify the emotions that will drive them to sign up for this vacation package. As for relationship management, that includes the whole package, including how I handle the relationship I have with my client. (Note to self: Don't tell him I'm a vegetarian.) Whatever the product or service, applying the four domains of EI to your work process will always make your copy better. And, as I touched on in the hunting example, high EI will also help you develop better relationships with your clients. How AI PLUS EI Gives You the Best of Both Worlds AI does its own thing really well. No question about it. But bots have zero Emotional Intelligence. This is why it's never a good idea to rely on AI alone. Let's close with three practical tips on how to include more emotion and EI in your copy: - Use simple language. AI says, "At a fundamental level, cooking requires a certain degree of cognitive engagement." Humans say, "When you're cooking, it's best to stay focused."
- Tell stories. They don't have to be big, elaborate stories. They can be as simple as an anecdote or memory, like the memory of the seagull and the ice cream.
- Ask questions. Engage your readers emotionally with simple questions, like, "Frustrating, isn't it?" (An AI doesn't know what frustration feels like.) That's pretty much it! Make the most of what AI can do for you as a writer, but never forget that tools like ChatGPT can't feel emotions. Emotional Intelligence is the "secret sauce" that will improve all your AI-assisted content and copy. Feel it! 😊 With some proper training in how to harness the power of AI, you can dramatically boost your output and productivity — setting yourself up to earn WAY more while writing LESS … … all while consistently delivering high-quality copy to your clients.
