This little lesson can open doors … [The Writer’ s Life]( July 6, 2022 "It is not the employer who pays the wages. Employers only handle the money … It is the customer who pays the wages." – Henry Ford Hi {NAME}, Last week we took a family cruise … It's one of our favorite vacations, as it has something for everyone … entertainment, games, great food (loads of it), activities for the kiddos, fun destinations … I'd been anticipating it for months, but in the days leading up, I found myself anxious about getting on the boat. Not about the actual cruise, per se … But the boarding process. The first day of a cruise is always such a hassle. It takes hours to get to the port, navigate parking, and make your way through mobs of people to the ship, then wait for your boarding time to be called, then the paperwork … And now, on top of it all, they've got NEW health protocols. The hoops you have to jump through just to relax … It all just makes me anxious. So that morning, I calmed my thoughts, and kept repeating to myself: "Be patient and give everyone grace — including yourself." I focused on the end game … dinner on the first night of a wonderful vacation with my family. A few hours later we arrived at the port … And in 10 minutes, we were on the boat! 🤯 It was like nothing we'd ever experienced before with a cruise. Someone had improved the entire process! And we started our adventure relaxed and ready for fun. What does this have to do with copywriting? A lot, actually. My cruise is a major example of the impact improving the customer experience can have. Think about the last time you looked for something you needed online — could you easily find what you were looking for? What about trying to get your questions answered or buying something from a website? Or better yet, trying to cancel or return something … Or lower your monthly phone payment. 😱 Every business you encounter, website you visit, product you buy … they all have experiences associated with them. Some good, some bad. The good ones you notice, and usually return. The bad ones … well, you tend to avoid in the future if possible. In fact, 88% of online shoppers WILL NOT return to a website after a bad experience! The customer's experience can make or break any business. And as a writer, you can help companies stay in business and thrive with a writing specialty called User Experience copywriting — or [UX copywriting](. Along with being a growing opportunity for writers, it gives you a competitive advantage over all other writers — and an automatic in with any company. If you're brand new to UX, we have a [free beginner's guide for you here](. We also have a [professional-grade training program that gets you working as a UX copywriter](. But either way, here's something to consider … Every company has experiences that can be improved. EVERY company. And they often don't even see them … I call them blind spots … and the longer the company has been around, the more they likely have. Take AWAI for example … After 25 years of publishing content and training programs, it's a massive machine. There are numerous doors writers can walk through to join. And we often forget what it's like to approach this huge writing opportunity for the first time. Spend 30 minutes on our [website](, and I'm sure you'll find loads of places where we can improve. You'll find the same with any other company you want to write for, too. Where is the copy unclear? Where are there dead ends? What questions go unanswered? There are lots of areas where a writer can improve the UX … And once you find them, you'll use them to get your foot in the door, and then get paid to fix them. Because a good experience is how companies compete. It's how they'll attract more prospects … It's how they'll build great relationships with those prospects … Convert them to buyers … And keep them happy long into the future. And as a writer, you have great power in helping improve it with your words.
