This is getting interesting … [The Writer’ s Life]( June 15, 2022 "Opportunities? They are all around us … There is power lying latent everywhere waiting for the observant eye to discover it." – Orison Swett Marden Web3 is on the rise, {NAME} … And while as a consumer, I'm excited about things like buying concert tickets directly from the band (middleman fees be-darned!) … As a writer, I'm even more excited about the huge companies like Disney, McDonalds, Nike, and Chase Bank who are dumping money into Web3 platforms, preparing for an influx of users. Because where money is being spent, [writers are needed](. And all kinds of companies, large and small — both household names and new companies you've never heard of — will be in need of writers who understand the Web3 space. Now if you're new to this conversation, don't worry … it's okay to go slow. :) I've asked Nick Usborne (one of the world's first Web3 writing experts — if not THE first) to explain what we need to know about it below. Honestly, I had a little trouble wrapping my mind around it, at first. Words like "NFTs," "DeFi," and "blockchain" … ?!? Fortunately, Nick is a gifted teacher … And below he shares how it all works, the size of the opportunity, and why, as a writer, you should at least pick up a few basics. [Rebecca Matter’ s signature] Rebecca Why The Rise of Web3 Is Such a Huge and Growing Opportunity for Digital Copywriters By Nick Usborne Before we dig in, let's define what we mean by "Web3". Basically, Web3 is a new iteration of the internet, based on blockchain technologies. A blockchain is like a database or ledger. But, unlike a traditional database, a blockchain is decentralized. Nobody owns or controls it. There is no company that owns the blockchains for cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin or Ethereum. No bosses. No shareholders. In the world of Web3 you own and control your own identity. Your personal information is no longer collected and monetized by huge corporations like Facebook, Google, Apple, or Amazon. Yep … it's a brave new world! How blockchain technologies work … Each blockchain has its own cryptocurrency. Bitcoin for the Bitcoin blockchain, Eth for the Ethereum blockchain. And so on. There are plenty of other blockchains and cryptocurrencies. This means I can send you crypto money … First, I convert some of my dollars into a cryptocurrency like Eth. I can then send some Eth from my crypto wallet to yours. Here's the thing … that transfer is direct, from wallet to wallet. It doesn't go through a bank, or PayPal, or any other intermediary. And everything that happens on a blockchain stays on the blockchain. Transactions cannot be edited or deleted. Ever. Blockchain technologies are opening new opportunities every day. Two huge new industries made possible by Web3. Developers are working 24/7 in their search for cool new stuff that is made possible when you're working with blockchains. One big area is finance. Finance on the blockchain is called DeFi … Decentralized Finance. It's a whole new financial sector, separate from banks, the Fed, and every other financial institution … globally. Web3 never sleeps. DeFi takes place 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. You can invest in cryptocurrencies. You can invest in crypto liquidity pools. You can stake your crypto. Earn huge interest rates on your crypto. You can make millions … or lose millions. DeFi isn't for the faint of heart. Honestly, unless you're investing money you're 100% comfortable losing, I'd stay away. It's still the Wild West out there. The second huge industry to grow out of this space is the world of NFTs … Non-Fungible Tokens. You've probably already heard about NFTs. NFTs can take the form of collections of digital art. (Top auction houses like Christies and Sotheby's are already selling NFT art.) Or personal profile pictures for use in social media. (Check out the Bored Ape Yacht Club collection. Bet you can't afford one. I know I can't!) You can create and sell event tickets as NFTs. (Google Gary Vaynerchuk's VeeFriends NFT.) Companies like Nike and Adidas are already selling NFTs that give their buyers access to both digital and physical sneakers and sportswear. Coke has sold NFTs. So has Disney. The list is growing daily. If you haven't heard of NFTs before, well … now you have. If you don't own any NFTs yet, I bet you will soon. They're going mainstream. Why does this matter to us as digital copywriters? Put simply, Web3 is already generating a TON of opportunities for digital writers and copywriters. This is an area of mad growth. Let me put that level of growth into perspective. Back in the 1990's Jeff Bezos stated: "I came across the fact that Web usage was growing at 2,300% per year. I'd never seen or heard of anything that grew that fast. The idea of an online bookstore w/ millions of titles, was very exciting to me." By comparison, NFT trade volume grew by 21,000% in 2021! That's almost TEN times the growth rate that inspired Jeff Bezos to create Amazon.com. Tens of BILLIONS of dollars will be spent on NFTs this year. Over $8 billion were spent in January and February alone. Jeff Bezos looked at the number of web users, and launched Amazon as a result. A new generation of founders are doing the same when they look at the growth numbers for Web3. Thousands of crypto-native companies will be launched this year, and they'll all need copywriters. Plus … millions of existing companies will decide to get into NFTs this year, and they'll need your help too. They'll need websites to be written or updated, they'll need social media updates to be written, they'll need backstories created for their NFT projects. And much, much more. Put simply, as they dive into this new iteration of the Internet — Web3 — every business, new or established, will need crypto-fluent writers. THIS is one of those rare opportunities that arise just once or twice in a copywriter's career. Which is why I'm all-in on Web3, and have been for over a year now. Tomorrow, I'll tell you how YOU can be among the first to dive in and take your own slice of this extraordinary new opportunity.
