If your heart is broken, make art with the pieces. â Shane KoyczanI write to you from Boston, in shock and sorrow.Tomorrow, I will be resolute. Tomorrow, I will find my legs and stand against Trump and his tyranny. Iâll bring to bear all the things he doesnât have and will never understand: empathy, compassion, imagination, tolerance, generosity, and fellowship. But today I grieve. I donât know what to think about my country, how to feel about my fellow citizens who voted â free and fair â for the living, breathing antithesis of everything I cherish.I do know, though, that even in my grief I refuse to participate in the politics of hate. And so Iâm making a pledge â to Trump, to myself, and to you. Tomorrow, I will be resolute. Tomorrow, I will find my legs and stand against Trump and his tyranny. Iâll bring to bear all the things he doesnât have and will never understand: empathy, compassion, imagination, tolerance, generosity, and fellowship. But today I grieve. I donât know what to think about my country, how to feel about my fellow citizens who voted â free and fair â for the living, breathing antithesis of everything I cherish. I do know, though, that even in my grief I refuse to participate in the politics of hate. And so Iâm making a pledge â to Trump, to myself, and to you. Join me, and weâll pay to publish it in the New York Times. and push it worldwide on social media â bringing even more people along with us. [Sign the pledge]( Weâre bruised but not broken. Weâre scared and sad, but weâre STILL IN IT. Trump has won, for now. But we wonât make it easy, and we wonât get down in the mud and muck with him. We pledge⦠â¦to meet his hatred with love. He will find us between your guns and the immigrants he's aiming them at. â¦to safeguard the rights he would revoke. Weâll be standing side by side with every woman in every state who needs an abortion. â¦to build up what he seeks to tear down. Weâll make ourselves heard at climate talks, and at the United Nations, and NATO, and the capitals of our allies, reminding them that he doesn't speak for all of us. â¦to resist his racism, bigotry, greed, and warmongering by elevating the voices of those he would silence: minorities, immigrants, LGBTQ+ people, and everyone everywhere across the globe who needs a helping hand to escape poverty, oppression, war, and starvation. Weâve seen men like Trump before. We stood against their tyranny and weâll stand against his. Signed, [Sign the pledge]( Today is not a good day. Itâs ok to just sit with that. I plan to, for a bit. And then I plan to get to work to make tomorrow better. I hope you will too. With hope,
