This is huge: New York’s governor is close to signing a law that will end the free ride for corporate polluters – making big oil pay for decades of planet-wrecking pollution. But corporate interests are fighting hard to stop it. The decision is on a knife-edge – and we need a massive surge of support before Avaaz and partners meet with Governor Hochul. Let’s get her to act! Add your name and share widely – timing is everything! Imagine if big oil were forced to pay for polluting the planet. If after decades of free-riding they would be held accountable for floods, droughts and heatwaves impacting all of us.This isn't a fantasy: a new law in New York would do exactly that – bringing in billions of dollars from corporate polluters to deal with climate disasters. But it's on a knife-edge as the governor is under enormous pressure from big business. We need a groundswell of public support to make her act. But corporate interests are fighting hard to stop it. The decision is on a knife-edge – and we need a massive surge of support before Avaaz and partners meet with Governor Hochul. Let’s get her to act! Add your name and share widely – timing is everything! [Sign now]( Dear friends around New York, Imagine if big oil were forced to pay for polluting the planet.
If after decades of free-riding they would be held accountable for floods, droughts and heatwaves impacting all of us. This isn't a fantasy: a new law in New York would do exactly that – bringing in billions of dollars from corporate polluters to deal with climate disasters. But it's on a knife-edge as the governor is under enormous pressure from big business. We need a groundswell of public support to make her act. If passed, it could set a national precedent for a federal bill. But timing is critical! Add your name now – Avaaz and partners are meeting with the governor in days: [Tell Governor Hochul: Make polluters pay!]( Here's how it would work: the bill would raise $3 billion a year to help cover the costs of climate change and the energy transition. The funds would come from about three dozen companies and industries responsible for driving global warming -- like the big oil corporations that have knowingly lied to the public for decades about the dangers of fossil fuels, all while raking in massive profits. Climate "superfunds" are becoming popular. California is considering them, and already passed in Vermont. And while many governments have set up funds to combat climate change, they are mostly funded by taxpayers, not the corporations directly responsible for the harm. If Governor Hochul signs this climate superfund into law, she could kickstart a domino effect for other states to follow -- encouraging a similar approach at the federal level. But she needs to see and feel immense pressure to act, especially as she faces industry lobbyists. [Tell Governor Hochul: Make polluters pay!]( The tide is turning — for too long, corporations have not been held accountable. Allies in Vermont have opened the door to make polluters pay. And together, we can ensure New York opens the floodgates of accountability and builds a safe and sustainable future for all.
