TLDR: We’ve just released a new data study pitching all traffic estimate tools against each other, and one tool is clearly doing a better job. To know which one, [watch the video on Youtube](. If you’ve been following any of our pieces of training, you know we heavily rely on Ahrefs. We’ve done it for years, we’ve always liked it, but many of our students look at the price table and go like:  And it’s true, compared to the competition they’re more expensive. But if it helps you make better decisions with the hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars you invest in your sites, it’s probably worth it. However, if the info given is similar to cheaper competitors, why pay more? And that’s the question we set to answer in this week’s experiment. You can either keep reading this email to get the answer [or watch the video we made about it](.
The Experiment
We focused this test on the traffic estimates the tools give for a given page, as that’s how most of us do keyword research these days. Or should I say topic research?  And to evaluate how accurate these numbers are, we asked a bunch of our Authority Hacker Pro members (our advanced course) to share their analytics data with us so we can compare them with the numbers the tools give us. We subscribed to the following tools for this test: - Ahrefs
- Serpstat
- SEMRush
- Surfer SEO
- Ubersuggest
- SimilarWeb After crunching the data and comparing hundreds of page’s actual analytics stats against the estimates these tools gave us, here’s what we found… The Results
I’m not going to fluff this up. It’s not my style, but in terms of overall correlation, Ahrefs won, then they won even more after updating their estimates recently. And while their traffic estimates are pretty much always BELOW what the actual traffic is, their underestimation is consistent, which is a good thing when comparing sites to each other. By comparison, a tool like SEMRush was not that far in correlation but was either above or below by quite a margin, making the comparison between domains more difficult. And if you're a big crypto fan and want the same rollercoaster with your traffic estimates, we recommend you check SERPStat out because they often overestimated traffic by up to 25x. One tool that actually surprised us was Ubersuggest. It's much cheaper than all the other alternatives, and while it's not on the level of Ahrefs for traffic estimates, it definitely competes with the likes of SEMRush. This makes it a viable budget alternative to Ahrefs. Conclusion
So let’s go back to our initial question: Is Ahrefs worth the money? Well, for traffic estimates at least, we think this data shows it is. The consistent underestimation makes a comparison between domains possible, which is much harder to do with ANY other tool because they overestimate or underestimate. However, if the fee they ask is something you can not cope with, the best alternative for traffic estimates is surprisingly Ubersuggest. At just $29 per month, it’s the Ahrefs lite Tim and his team (had to do it 🙈) refused to build. And it kind of sucks for us to come to this conclusion when neither Ahrefs nor Ubersuggest pays us any commissions 😬. But regardless of how much we make from our content, you know we’ll always come to you with the truth and not what makes us a pretty penny. So I hope this study was useful and shines some light on why we use Ahrefs for all our research and content.
