But then I learned to listen for "beats" and now I can tune by ear. Beats are the pulsations that occur when two different frequencies are played at the same time. And if you learn how to listen for them and understand what they tell you, it becomes a lot easier to tune an instrument. Not only are beats helpful for tuning, but they are also fascinating (to an audio geek like me, at least...).
