Explore literary Ireland, Scotland’s food scene, alpine life in Slovenia, and the biodiversity

Explore literary Ireland, Scotland’s food scene, alpine life in Slovenia, and the biodiversity of the Galapagos with the writers who know them best. [View this email in your browser]( There’s something about travel that heightens the pleasures of a good book. Maybe it’s the luxury of having long, uninterrupted expanses of time to really immerse yourself in an author’s world. Or maybe there’s something about being in a different environment that opens our minds to new ideas. Whether it’s a well-worn guidebook, a classic novel, or an insightful history of the place we’re visiting, we just love to read when we’re on the road. What’s even better than a good travel-read? For us, it’s visiting a place with someone who literally wrote the book on it—or better yet, someone who’s passionate and deeply knowledgeable about some fascinating, under-explored aspect of the place. On our [trip to Scotland]( that means sharing a home-cooked, farm-fresh meal with Wendy Barrie, who created the Scottish Food Guide. On our [journey through literary Ireland]( it’s learning local folklore over pints at a Donegal pub with Keith Corcoran, an author dedicated to preserving his region’s millenia-old storytelling traditions. In [Slovenia]( our entire trip is hosted by Noah Charney, a novelist, art historian, and memoirist whose Slovenology unabashedly proclaims Slovenia “the world’s best country.” Of course, we’d be remiss not to mention our Galapagos trip with Cara Giaimo, author of Atlas Obscura’s forthcoming Wild Life book—more on that next week, when the book is officially released. Until then, who’s the writer you’d most like to travel with? Stay Curious, The AO Adventures Team Flavors of Scotland: Beyond the Haggis The trip: If Scotland and haggis don’t immediately get your taste buds tingling, prepare for your expectations to be challenged on this journey through the country’s incredible culinary scene. Visit the smokehouses, creameries, and world-class distilleries producing the country’s iconic dishes and [drams]( and meet the larger-than-life characters behind them. Who you'll meet: Join Wendy Barrie—award-winning cookbook author, advocate for Scotland’s best sustainable food producers, and consummate gastronome—for a meal in her Edinburgh home. [TAKE ME THERE]( Discovering Ireland: Literature, Legend & Myth The trip: In a region Yeats famously dubbed "the land of heart's desire," we'll go off the beaten path to swap [stories]( over pints in local pubs, listen to live folk music, taste fresh-from-the-sea oysters with the farmers who grow them, and sample Irish whiskey at a low-key local distillery. Who you’ll meet: Get a living lesson in the region’s millennia-old storytelling tradition from Keith Corcoran, an author and folklorist from County Donegal, at a cozy country pub. [TAKE ME THERE]( Forest to Table in Alpine Slovenia The trip: Explore one of the most stunningly beautiful and under-appreciated corners of Europe, foraging amongst the farms and fields of the Slovenian Alps. Enjoy alfresco fireside meals made with ingredients fresh from the forest you spent the afternoon foraging in; and meet homesteaders, chefs, brewers, and [schnapps-makers]( as you taste the very best of what Slovenia has to offer. Who you’ll meet: Your host is Atlas Obscura contributor, novelist, art historian, and memoirist Noah Charney, whose deep connections in Slovenia’s culinary world open doors that no one else can.
